ON THIS DAY…
In 1789, President George Washington issued a presidential proclamation declaring a Day of National Thanksgiving. This would not happen again until 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln asked Americans to “set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise.”
Today, on this anniversary of those Thanksgivings, we would like to say a special thanks to you, our members! And if you would like to say thank you to a particularly wonderful member in your Auxiliary or Department, you can do so by nominating them for the VFW Auxiliary Magazine’s Member Spotlight feature!

Have you heard of Auxiliary SWAP?
SWAP was an initiative started in 2018 that encouraged members to Share Wonderful Auxiliary Projects. It works when an Auxiliary has had a great idea for a project, event, parade float, membership recruitment or promotion and decides to document and share that idea with other Auxiliaries.
Below are 3 easy ways to SWAP!
Social Media: Photograph your event, project, etc. and share along with “How To” information on your Auxiliary’s page. Ask your Department to share your post too, in order to ensure the idea reaches more members. With every posting, use the hashtag so members from all over the country and beyond can see these ideas, too.
The E-Newsletter: If you’ve had a great idea that you’d like to share with our membership, be it a type of membership drive, Program promotion, request for a new type of press release, community project or even a cool parade float, send it to us at [email protected] with the subject line “AuxSWAP.” We would love to periodically share these with our membership through the E-News throughout the year!
Word of Mouth: Talk up your ideas the old-fashioned way! Go to a District, Department or County Council meeting, Conference or Convention and chat with fellow members about what you did, how you did it, what worked, what didn’t, and what may work for others in the future! Answer questions, but also exchange ideas for the future that might improve upon what you’ve done and help them to have the same positive experience your Auxiliary did.
When you share your Auxiliary’s ideas and another Auxiliary runs with them, that’s a successful Auxiliary SWAP!

The VFW Auxiliary offers cancer grants to members who are battling cancer. Eligibility requirements:
• Applicant must be a member of the VFW Auxiliary for one (1) full year.
• Current dues must be paid before applying for a cancer grant.
• After twelve (12) months have passed from date of diagnosis or last treatment, application will not be accepted.
• A member is allowed two (2) grants during lifetime. Twelve (12) months must elapse between new diagnosis and/or treatment from date of first grant for a second application to be considered. Continuous treatment which lasts beyond the twelve (12) month period will qualify for a second grant.
• Application will be rejected if member has been deceased for longer than 30 days.
The grant amount is currently $550.00 and funds are paid directly to the member or, in the case of a deceased member, to their estate. Funds are dispersed 2-4 weeks following the acceptance and approval of the completed and signed application. Please read the instructions carefully before submitting an application. The most common reason an application is denied is due to missing information from either the member or physician.
To access the application, log into your MALTA account.
