The Division of Engineering has been advised that Union County will begin concrete and manhole replacement work on Morris Ave near Springfield Ave on Monday, August 26, weather permitting. This work is in anticipation of paving Morris Ave between Springfield Ave (near City Hall) and the end of Morris Ave at Springfield Ave (near Briant Park).
Road closures and detours may be in effect while this work is completed. Project details available on county website: https://ucnj.org/traffic-site/roadconstructionupdate.html.

On August 9, 2024 at approximately 5:01pm, two New Providence Police Officers, in marked police vehicles with emergency lights activated, were conducting a motor vehicle stop on the westbound shoulder of Interstate 78, near mile marker 43. A westbound Honda Odyssey struck the rear of the New Providence patrol vehicle, causing a chain reaction crash with the next New Providence Police vehicle and the Mercedes Benz that Officers had originally conducted the motor vehicle stop upon.
Two New Providence Police Officers sustained injuries and are currently in stable condition at Morristown Memorial Hospital. The driver of the Honda Odyssey sustained injuries and was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital. The occupants from the Mercedes Benz, who were seated inside the tow truck, were evaluated by EMS and released on scene.
Berkeley Heights Fire Department, New Providence Fire Department, Union County Fire Command, Berkeley Heights EMS, Union County EMS, and Atlantic Paramedics responded to the scene. The New Jersey State Police, Berkeley Heights Police Department, Summit Police Department, and New Jersey Department of Transportation also responded. The New Jersey State Police are currently investigating the crash.

The City of Summit's annual National Night Out event originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 6, has been postponed to Tuesday, August 20, due to anticipated poor weather conditions. The event has been postponed at this time in order to effectively manage the logistical aspects of this large community event and to ensure the safety and success of the event for all participating agencies, entertainers, and attendees.
The featured concert on the new event date is Brian Kirk and the Jirks. All other event information and details are the same. More information is available at www.summitcommunityprograms.com/182/National-Night-Out.
The Hot Summer Nights Concert originally scheduled for Tuesday, August 6, featuring The Benjamins, is still scheduled to take place on the Village Green at this time. If the concert needs to be canceled due to poor weather conditions, this information will be shared at 12PM on August 6 on the city website and social media platforms.

Pedestrian Struck on Springfield Avenue
SUMMIT, NJ, July 31, 2024 – On Wednesday, July 31, at 12:45PM, the Summit Police Department responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle at the entrance to the Tier Garage, located at 426 Springfield Avenue in Summit.
The pedestrian, a 73-year-old Summit woman, was reported to be crossing the alleyway when she was struck by a 2021 Jeep Cherokee. The driver, an 85-year-old Springfield man, was traveling east on Springfield Avenue, and turned right into the alleyway leading into the garage. The driver advised police that as he made the turn, he looked ahead to several parking spaces and did not see the victim until just before the vehicle struck her with the left front bumper/hood of his vehicle. There was no apparent damage to the vehicle.
The victim was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital by the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad for treatment.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Summit Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau.
