I had a vision of hosting a "KIDS EPIC" ride at the Santos Fat Tire MTB Festival in Ocala. For the many that don't know about this event, the EPIC is a 50 mile ride where riders from all over of all ages ride along the predetermined route for a day of fun and challenge to finish!

Big thanks to Kyle's Bike Shop & Kyle n Christy for helping make the ride go off without a hitch!

Well, we had 21 kids do 21 miles!!! The youngest to complete this huge achievement, was just 7 years old. Julian, on his Trailcraft Blue Sky 20" persevered & completed the route. He was complaining & on the official pain train for the last 2 miles, but we finished it, together! There were also underprivileged kids that were sponsored to be there & joined the ride, smiles from ear to ear were had by all! It was simply an awesome experience.

All About Balance MTB did a clinic at FTF & a few of our Groms did so great & loved it!

Now, to start planning for next year, 50 kids to complete the "Junior EPIC" at FTF!

What an Awe-some day at Adrenaline Bike Works for the kids parking lot & shop trail race along with the Jump Jam competition! We started the raffle for a new Norco 24" with proceeds going to the GS. The day was filled with fun all around & we did a kids trail ride on the uber fun Mt Dora trail! Julian (7) lapped the dirt jump line at the shop for over 2 hrs straight and then the kids rode the mini bikes in the shop for another hour! Thanks to Adrenaline & everyone who came out!

Look out for monthly rides & events in Central Florida, and we are looking for someone to help host South FL rides too! Since we are based in Orlando, we can get down there a few times per year.

Is there a specific day that works better for most, like the 1st Saturday of the month?

Grom Pre-Ride for ’s Bad Habit Race with leading the way. Bring the kids out to practice the course (it is changed and even reversed in some areas for this race) and meet some of the riders and racers (emphasis on the camaraderie, rather than the competition). We will run the race courses and then circle back to work on any areas the kids may be having trouble with so that they feel comfortable on race day. Packet pick up is across the street at until 4 so there will be plenty of time for afterwards. Make sure to register for the race ahead of time at www.racemarkham.com

Families looking to race the Bad Habit or if you are on the fence about it, we will be pre-riding the junior and kids race courses the day before. Team Savage will be there to lead, sweep and we will be sessioning any areas we need to make sure the kids are comfortable for race day. This is a great opportunity to meet some of the kids that will be out there with them during the race. This is a FUN race and it's even more fun when you have your friends with you. Also, make sure to register to race at www.racemarkham.com before Dec. 31.

I remember the first time I had the courage to ride this (on my 29”) and I’ll confess it was less years ago than this little guy is old. Soon to be 4years old will follow the big kids on any line. (Not remotely exaggerating… we have to pull him back and keep a sharp eye or he’ll follow them on Bunker)

If you aren’t having fun, you aren’t doing it right.

Squad parents, I can't say this enough, if your kids aren't having fun and making great memories with you and their friends, then you're missing the best part of this sport.

You guys: biking with kids should be FUN. As in: THEY should be having fun.

That doesn't seem too controversial, does it? And yet, looking at my Instagram feed it feels like we've lost that message.

Everybody on IG seems to have a 2-year-old BMX "champion." Huh? Kids are going bigger and faster and searching for sponsors, and while it certainly makes for an entertaining IG feed, is it really healthy?!

Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't get your kids out on their bikes. We all know if mom and dad didn't intervene, they'd all spend 12 hours a day playing video games or watching cartoons. And I'm not saying you shouldn't work on skill development or sign your kid up for a local race (if they think that's fun). Kids are capable of way more than the average parent realizes.

But at the end of the day it should be FOR FUN. It shouldn't be to win (yet). It shouldn't be to get a sponsor (yet). There shouldn't be any "training" (yet).

And in case you think I'm judging you, I'm not. I've been as guilty as anyone at times. But I've also realized that having a child who continues to enjoy biking for YEARS TO COME is way more important than being rad on a bike TODAY.

So, I'm just offering a reminder: make sure biking is about FUN. They'll be plenty of time later on for it to be about being fast, about going big, and about pushing hard. Right now they are kids.

Here are some guidelines from USA Cycling and the American Development Model:

- Ages 0-6: Children are encouraged to participate in as many physical activities as possible with minimal to no competition in this stage.

- Ages 6-12: Emphasis on MULTI-SPORT. Emphasize practice over competition.

- Ages 10-16: Beginning of more structured training and racing (but not over competing). Fun and socialization are still key areas of emphasis in order to encourage future participation and to avoid burnout.

- Ages 14+: Kids begin to train and compete in a program that matches their own personal interests and developmental needs.

I am thankful for: days like this.

So much fun watching how quickly these kids bond when they are on two wheels. Amazing day on the trail with a bunch of old friends and new friends.

11/21/2021

I always hesitate about these posts because I'm worried they might intimidate some kids, and especially some parents. Grom Squad MTB is for everyone, from beginners to shredders. But, these boys accomplished so much this past weekend, just by having fun. Their excitement and enthusiasm for this sport was on display almost 18 hours a day (not joking, they were all on the airbag at the campground until the late late hours every night) and it was contagious across the whole event. These young boys inspired not just other kids, but some pretty seasoned riders. Many involved have now begun to reimagine the inclusion of kids and families in the mountain biking community. For that, I am so thankful to these boys and their parents for sharing them with us all. Shawn Lukens Geoff Hons

Hey Squad, I had to order a few more of these awesome Grom Squad hoodies (due to a miscalculation on my part) and I’m going to order some stock to try and get a little better price for us. I kind of splurged on these with the embroidery, but I LOVE how they came out. Basically, doing them at cost and I will cut off pre-orders (custom) on Nov 30 so I can have them done by the Jump Jam and under Christmas trees for the groms. After that, you’ll be limited to whatever is left that I ordered extra. We can ship or do local or event pickups. Also, give me a shout if there is something else you would like to see. (jerseys are coming.. I'm just a horrible procrastinator on those)

Our friends at Adrenaline Bike Works are hosting a jump jam to benefit the Florida_Freeriders on December 18 in Mt. Dora and have challenged us to bring the groms. Challenge Accepted.

The Jam is 10-2 with jump lessons and a competition (incl. youth and female divisions). There is also a night holiday ride leaving from the shop at 7 as well so plenty of time to rest, check out Mt. Dora trails and, of course, do a little Christmas shopping in the bike shop. Bring your bike lights, holiday sweaters and Santa’s lists.
PM here or on FB if you will need to stay over in Mt. Dora as I’m looking into hotels etc and may try and get a group rate if we have enough ppl interested.
