Swimming Pools Safe When Properly Maintained

The Center for Disease Control says that COVID-19 cannot be transmitted through properly maintained pools and spas – “There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.” www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/php/water.html

The Florida Swimming Pool Association reminds everyone that while staying at home during the current pandemic, it is a great time to enjoy swimming pools and hot tubs. Pools and spa owners should follow current guidelines of only allowing 10 people in the pool and deck area at a time. By limiting numbers of pool participants and allowing for space between one another, people will help keep each other stay safe while still enjoying the pool.

Proper maintenance, upkeep and testing of pools should be done at regular intervals and preferably performed and monitored by licensed professionals to ensure proper pool and public health. All entry and exit points into and out of the pool and deck area such as ladders, gates, and doors should be properly sanitized throughout the day.

Pools and spas are valuable resources to communities, allowing adults and children access to healthy and safe recreation and relaxation.

The Florida Swimming Pool Association is a trade association for the pool and spa industry in Florida. There are approximately 700 member businesses in 16 Chapters across the state. Members are required to abide by a code of ethics and to be properly licensed and insured. FSPA provides the industry with access to continuing education courses, information on current trends and issues, and an arbitration program and government relations representation. FSPA is governed by a Board of Directors.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a virus (more specifically, a coronavirus) identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China.

HURRICANE PRECAUTIONS AS IT RELATES TO YOUR SWIMMING POOL:

BEFORE THE STORM:

• DO NOT DRAIN YOUR POOL: IT IS NOT USUALLY NECESSARY TO DRAIN YOUR POOL. If your pool is properly equipped with adequate drains & skimmers & the surrounding area has proper drainage, the water level can probably be left as is.

• Keeping sufficient water levels in your pool provides the important weight to hold the sides and bottom in place, especially when heavy rains that accompany most storms raise the local water table. Pools which have been emptied may experience serious subsidence problems and could even be lifted off their foundation.

• TURN OFF ALL ELECTRICAL POWER TO SWIMMING POOL. (Pump, motor, lighting, chlorinators, etc.) If your pump is in an unsheltered area, wrap it with a waterproof membrane (Like a Heavy Duty Garbage Bag) and tie it securely in place to prevent sand and driving water from entering the motor.

• REMOVE ALL LOOSE ITEMS FROM POOL AREA. It is not advisable to throw patio furniture or accessories into the pool as it could damage the pool surface/tile.

• As the storm approaches, especially once we are under a storm (Tropical or Hurricane) warning, we will stop cleaning (which would be pointless) and concentrate on chlorinating as many pools as possible. We will work ahead to get to the pools that we would normally be cleaning over the next 1 to 2 days to put chemicals in them. This way, hopefully no pool will have to go without chlorine for more than one week.

AFTER THE STORM:

• Have patience, we will be there! Just as soon as we have fuel, chemicals and can physically access your property safely (i.e. power lines or trees down) we will be out in the field to assess damage, add chemicals and begin storm-clean ups.

• Remove any wrapping around pump motor. If pump has been under water, do not turn on electric power. If a pump has been under water and you turn it on, it could result in burning out the motor.

• Keep in mind, what day is your usual service day? We will be working as quickly and effectively as we can to get back onto our normal service schedule.

• Storm Clean Up Fees – Your monthly charge for weekly service does not include storm clean-up.

• Agreeing to pay for storm clean-up does not mean your pool will be back to normal immediately. It may take days or a few weeks get your pool back to its normal condition depending on the amount of damage/foliage,etc.

• After the storm is over and your pool has been cleaned up, we will check the pool for stabilizer. If any stabilizer is required, you will only be charged for the amount needed.
