Today is May 29th, also known as 5/29 Day—a special day to highlight the incredible benefits of 529 plans for educational savings. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, or anyone with a special child in your life, 529 plans offer a fantastic way to invest in their future. Here’s why you should consider starting or contributing to a 529 plan today:

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝟱𝟮𝟵 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻?
A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged savings account designed specifically for education expenses. Named after Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code, these plans provide a flexible and powerful way to save for college, K-12 tuition, and even student loan repayments.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟱𝟮𝟵 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀
1️⃣ Tax Advantages: Earnings in a 529 plan grow federal tax-free and are not taxed when the money is used for qualified education expenses. Many states offer tax deductions or credits for contributions to their own 529 plans.
2️⃣ Flexibility: Funds can be used for a wide range of educational expenses, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, and even some room and board costs. With recent changes, 529 plan funds can also be used to pay off student loans (up to $10,000 lifetime limit per beneficiary). Starting in 2024, 529 plan owners now have the option to use excess 529 plan funds to jumpstart the retirement savings of their beneficiaries. Owners of a 529 plan can move unused funds in the account directly to the plan beneficiaries Roth IRA.
3️⃣ Control: The account owner maintains control over the account and can change beneficiaries to another qualifying family member if the original beneficiary doesn’t need the funds. If a student decides to pursue a less expensive educational path or receives more merit scholarships, those 529 plan funds can still be earmarked for their future.
4️⃣ Low Impact on Financial Aid: 529 plan savings have a relatively small impact on financial aid eligibility compared to other savings and investment accounts.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 & 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰
1️⃣ The 529 transfer is subject to a lifetime maximum of $35,000 from a 529 plan account to a Roth IRA.
2️⃣ IRA contribution limits still apply. For 2024, those limits are $7,000 per year if the beneficiary is under 50 and $8,000 per year for those 50 and over. These limits are subject to change every year.
3️⃣ Roth IRA income limits do not apply but earned income requirements do. The Roth IRA income thresholds will not apply to these contributions; however, the beneficiary will need to have earned income equal to or more than the contribution to move 529 plan funds into the Roth.
