Yoga is more than just a physical practice; it is a profound journey that touches every aspect of our being. Beyond the stretches and poses, yoga has the power to heal the soul. It offers a sanctuary where we can reconnect with our true selves and find solace in the midst of life’s chaos.

Through the practice of yoga, we learn to quiet the mind and listen to the whispers of our inner wisdom. The rhythmic flow of breath and movement helps to release stored tension and emotional blockages, allowing us to experience a deep sense of peace and clarity. As we move through each pose, we are encouraged to let go of negative thoughts and embrace a more positive and compassionate outlook on life.

Yoga also fosters a sense of connection—both with ourselves and with the world around us. It teaches us to be present, to appreciate the beauty in each moment, and to cultivate gratitude for the simple things. This mindful approach to life can transform our perspective, helping us to navigate challenges with grace and resilience.

The healing power of yoga extends beyond the mat. It nurtures our spirit, strengthens our resilience, and opens our hearts to love and compassion. Whether you are seeking physical healing, emotional balance, or spiritual growth, yoga offers a path to wholeness and well-being.

Embrace the transformative power of yoga and allow it to heal your soul. Through consistent practice, you can experience a profound sense of inner peace, joy, and fulfillment. Let yoga be your guide on the journey to healing and self-discovery.

Grace often emerges from a state of inward harmony, where body, mind, and spirit are aligned. When these elements are in balance, we can respond to life’s challenges with poise and compassion.

This harmony fosters resilience, allowing us to move through the world with a sense of ease and authenticity. Cultivating practices that nurture this balance—like mindfulness, self-reflection, and connection—can lead to a graceful presence in all aspects of life.

Inner peace is a crucial component of overall well-being and quality of life, offering numerous benefits that extend across various aspects of one’s existence.

By achieving a state of mental and emotional serenity, you can experience significant stress reduction, which not only lowers the risk of heart problems and improves immune function but also contributes to better mental health by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

A peaceful mind enhances concentration and decision-making abilities, fostering more productive and fulfilling personal and professional lives. Moreover, inner peace improves relationship dynamics, as it promotes emotional stability and reduces reactionary behaviors, leading to healthier and more supportive interactions. The pursuit of inner peace also increases self-awareness and personal growth, allowing individuals to find deeper happiness and satisfaction in the simplicity of the present moment.

Ultimately, maintaining inner peace can contribute to longevity by mitigating the adverse effects of stress and promoting a more balanced and joyful life. You can achieve this through the meditative practice of yoga. , , ,

Self-care refers to the practices and activities that we deliberately engage in to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. It’s all about being mindful of our own needs and taking steps to meet them.

Self-care is highly individualized, so what works for one person may not work for another. The key is to identify activities and practices that make you feel refreshed, restored, and ready to face life’s challenges.

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential for your well-being and your ability to care for others effectively.

Effortless meditation, often referred to as non-directive or natural meditation, emphasizes ease and naturalness in practice, distinguishing it from techniques that require intense focus or concentration.

This form of meditation typically involves sitting quietly and allowing the mind to wander freely, without attempting to control or direct thoughts. The key principle is to not engage or interfere with the natural flow of thoughts, but rather to observe them passively, without attachment or judgment.

This approach is believed to facilitate a deep state of rest and relaxation, which can lead to enhanced self-awareness and a profound sense of peace. Unlike more structured practices, effortless meditation doesn’t demand mental effort to maintain focus on a specific object, such as the breath or a mantra.

Instead, it allows the mind to operate freely, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals who find other forms of meditation challenging or stressful. Advocates suggest that by reducing the effort in meditation, we align more closely with our natural mental processes, leading to a more authentic and sustainable practice that can be easily integrated into daily life, fostering resilience against stress and improving overall well-being.

🪣✨ Imagine trying to fill a leaky bucket with water. No matter how much you pour in, it will never be full until the holes are patched. Achieving ‘Inner Balance’ works the same way. External efforts like diets and supplements can’t bring true harmony unless we address our internal ‘leaks’—stress, unresolved emotions, and mental well-being. True health starts from within. 🌟

Hips carry lots of emotions and the best pose for opening the hips is the pigeon pose. Because this pose involves the three joints, ankle, knee, and hips, we want to make sure we maintain the integrity of the hips, knees, and ankles.

Rather than forcing your way into the pose, it's best to know your limits and modify the pose by doing it sitting or if you do go into the pigeon, make sure to keep the foot close to the pelvis, keep the ankles toward the shin, and square your hips. Find your breath to "ease" into the pose and go deeper with every exhale. 🧘🏼‍♀️

Try these drills and remember that any part of the pose is still a pose. Don't force, it'll happen one day, but it's important to enjoy the process. ❤️

I have a new found respect and passion for the work that we do, we take a different approach to the sacred practice of Yoga with an intention toward self empowerment and healing. 🧘🏼‍♀️

Longevity, health, and wellness. is your responsibility. Sickness is what is perpetuated in our current medical system. I've learned and grown so much above and beyond what I expected through all the pain, suffering, and fear that eluded my days for the last three years.

Despite that, I feel 100% back to where I was, have recovered faster not because of anything else other than the fierce intention to get well. It takes tremendous mental resilience and strength to overcome those challenges in life. Yoga is a powerful tool to get out of your head and find the inner strength that you didn't know you had.

No matter what you maybe going through, please know that Functional Yoga Medicine provides the space and santuary for you to find the path back to you.

I hope so see you in class one day. Namaste! 🙏🏻

As a physical therapist teaching Yoga, I often notice the nuances in my students movement patterns and cringe knowing the anatomical stress that can often lead to injury in Yoga class. It's an affliction I have and all I want to do is to keep my students safe, and on the path to better body awareness.

With that in mind, today I want to talk about Salabhasana. As a long term Bikram Yogi. I know that it is taught with the feet together, but I find that can cause compression in the sacroiliac joint and the lumbar spine.

At Functional Yoga Medicine, we keep the feet shoulder width apart, interlace the hands and life the hands and feet while engaging the core, then with the energy faciliating an extension of the whole spine and the posterior kinetic chain, lift the head lengthening the spine, not compressing the neck.

We don't have much awareness of the posterior (back) chain and Yoga provides and opportunity to broaden our awareness for a safe and effective practice.

Try it and reach out to us if you have any questions! ❤️

Common question in yoga – do I keep my knees straight or bent in Seated Forward Fold?

The answer? It depends on your hamstring flexibility as well as your pelvic mobility!

A posteriorly tilted pelvis will make it difficult to fold forward because this pelvic position shortens the hamstrings. What we want is to create an anterior tilt in the pelvis instead.

Always start with your knees bent so that your belly is resting on the tops of your thighs. This belly-to-thigh contact ensures that your pelvis is anteriorly tilted. Then begin to shift your hips backwards, straightening the legs only as far as you can maintain belly-to-thigh contact.

It may help to sit on a block as well, which provides more room for you to get into an anteriorly tilted pelvis position.

Functional Yoga Medicine is a culmination of all my didactic and clinical experience and what I needed as a patient. ♥️

Our so-called "healthcare" system is for catastrophic and acute needs, not long-term health and longevity.

Health, wellness, and prevention are inside jobs, and it's up to you to engineer the optimal health you desire.

Because one thing I can tell you without a doubt is that without health, you have NOTHING. Health is your true WEALTH, and it's worth fighting for. Functional Yoga Medicine aims to provide you with all the tools you need to create and engineer your health and wellness to suit your needs.

It's not just yoga; we integrate functional medicine, physical therapy, nutrition, psychology, and eastern medicine to tie it all together and make you whole.

Functional Yoga Medicine is a way of life where you engineer the health, wellness, and longevity you want to create under your control.

Photos from Functional Yoga Medicine's post 03/22/2024

Earlier this week, we shared about the first three pillars of Functional Yoga Medicine that were designed to give students a structure in their yoga practice that fosters safety and evolution. Here are the final four pillars.

Controlled BREATH, with movement, allows for the body to deeply connect to the mind and regulate the nervous system from "fight or flight" (sympathetic nervous system activation) to "rest and digest" (parasympathetic nervous system activation).

ALIGNMENT is all about proper posture and biomechanics, honoring your body's natural ability to move. This awareness and precision allows for the profound flow of energy in the body, supporting optimal movement, performance, and overall health.

BALANCE is all about creating symmetry in the body from left to right, front to back, up to down, and inhale to exhale. With the increased awareness we gain through the Pillars, one becomes connected to their inner power.

Lastly, EMBODIMENT is about fully being yourself through the pose. For example, in Warrior I, II, and III or any pose, one can tap into inherent power from within to fully embody one's higher self.

We at Functional Yoga Medicine believe in the power of inner healing, and this is a system and framework we use to elevate ourselves to higher limits. Try a class today! Link in bio.

At Functional Yoga Medicine, we offer a variety of classes to suit all levels and needs. 🧘🏼‍♀️

Functional Yoga is a non-heated class for all-levels that focuses on functional body movements, proper alignment, posture, and core activation.

We focus on dynamic stability biomechanics, applying the laws of physics and geometry to facilitate precision of movement that aims to rebalance faulty movement patterns and poor postural habits that commonly develop in life.

This class is for all levels where you can enjoy fun and creative flows led by our fantastic Yoga practitioners who keep your practice safe and challenging.

Come give it a try! ♥️

At Functional Yoga Medicine, we've created a system that all teachers and students can follow to produce quick results in their practice. 🧘🏼‍♀️

The first three pillars are the Foundation, Core, and Polarity. Foundation serves as the anchor points of your body with the mat, whether it's your feet in balancing poses or hands in handstand, we need to connect with the foundation to provide sound support for the pose.

The second pillar is the core. Core activation is essential for a safe and progressive practice to keep your spine safe and to support the overall stability of the pose.

The third pillar, Polarity, is all about creating the push and pull or tension in the body with proper muscle activation. This is the belly to the crown of the head extending up and the belly to both feet rooting down, creating the lengthening effect by the push and pull in the mountain pose.

When you begin to check your body in this framework or pillars, you can ensure a safe practice that will catapult you to strengthen, lengthen, stabilize, and balance your body at any given time.

Mind-Body Mastery is the ultimate goal of the Pillars of Function Yoga Medicine, which serves as a foolproof system that you can use to keep your practice safe and robust.

Precision, focus, and breath control keep your mind and body connected and strong for life.

Save this post and make sure to follow me to find out more about the remaining 4 Functional Yoga Medicine pillars!

How you go into and out of poses is crucial because it creates the foundation for the pose and sets you up for progression in your practice.

Unfortunately, many slow their own progression with various pose modifications.

Here, I demonstrate Tree pose. While there are many variations and modifications for those with hip issues, you never fully evolve into the full expression of the pose when you modify.

The first thing to remember is that any part of the pose is still a pose. With that in mind, for Tree pose, first we flex the hip, then externally rotate at the hip, and then point the knee down and back while grounding through the standing foot. It's imperative to have proper activation at the ankle, knee, hip, pelvis, and core to support and align in this pose properly.

Rather than modifying from the start, it's helpful to break the pose down into its basic biomechanics so that your body learns to activate in that position, step by step, to grow and evolve with the pose. When you modify, students don't know how to progress beyond the modification, which can easily stump their progress if not careful.

I hope this helps and make sure you follow me for more insights! 🧘🏻‍♀️

Functional Yoga Medicine was created from my desperate desire to connect the dots in healthcare and provide truly integrative care where we can help make you whole.

As someone who's educated in Psychology, Nutrition, Physical Therapy, Functional Medicine, and Yoga, I felt disconnected when it came to putting it all together. As a patient, I experienced gaps in conventional healthcare and pretty soon I also experienced it in holistic and functional medicine. Health is a way of life and we as patients need more than check ups and prescriptions.

We need a way to get tuned into our own bodies and learn to recognize and respond to the symptoms with the confidence, knowing that we are doing the right thing for our bodies, as opposed to looking to experts to figure it out. Because the truth is, sometimes they don't have all the answers to your symptoms.

I don't know about you, but I want solutions that will save me from symptoms and disease so that I can have control and freedom over my health, and that's what Functional Yoga Medicine stands for. To empower you to engineer your own wellness for life.

The solution lies in your way of life, which means integrating and creating harmony in ALL aspects of your life. This includes your relationships, eating and exercise habits, finances, culture, preferences, triggers, stressors, patterns, etc. All of which influence your health. There's no one size fits all approach and it's not something others can dictate for you.

Every one of us are going through different phases, have different goals and aspirations, and have different priorities, likes and dislikes.

We need to learn to honor all that and weigh that against what we want to create to truly LIVE the solution everyday. We hope you come and try our center and experience the difference.

Schedule today and experience the difference! 🗓️

The practice of Yoga requires us to place weight into our hands, and as a Physical Therapist, I see lots of mistakes being made in class, mainly due to lack of shoulder girdle and forearm activation. 💪🏼

The muscle belly of the hand muscles are in the forearms, so we need to learn to "activate" the hands into the elbows, as well as the shoulder girdle.

The truth is that carpal tunnel, shoulder impingements, muscle imbalances, tendonitis, strain, and sprain can be avoided by proper activation, and sometimes rather than practicing Yoga in class and just "flowing" through, it's helpful to do drills to strengthen the proper muscles to stabilize and improve posture, alignment, strength, and stability.

Also, muscle growth and tone can be achieved so much faster this way. I hope you found this helpful! ✨

If you want to transform your yoga practice with proper alignment techniques, follow me for expert advice! 🧘🏻‍♀️
