Another Mid-States Dental Leaders Conference in the books. It’s my 6th time attending and it’s great to share ideas and concerns with my fellow dental leaders from around the Midwest. It’s also great to catch up with old friends and make some new one. I also ran into Sabrina, who interned at my office for years and is now a first year dental student at University of Louisville. I can’t wait for next year’s meeting in Michigan!

I can never resist the cupcakes patients bring when they get their braces off, even when they are giving me a hard time. But the Blackhawks?? Really? Let’s Go Blues!!

I just want to wish Jessica the best of luck in her dental hygienist program that she started this week. We are going to miss her smile and sunny attitude at the office. Good luck Jessica!!

Goodbye Chicago! It was a wonderful four days at for media training and a board meeting. Lots of work done over the days and I am ready to get back to seeing my patients until I head to Louisville later this week for the Midstates Dental Leadership Conference.

Day 2 of Mission of Mercy. A fully functional dental clinic ready to see over 1000 patients the next two days!

Day 1 of Illinois Mission of Mercy. We will transform this space into a fully functioning dental clinic to provide over 1 million dollars in free dental care to the underserved population. I’m so excited for this as it is always a highlight of my year to participate and give back.

Spending the day at .info annual session. Some good classes in the mornings and walking around the exhibit floor to see new all of the new products like this new iTero scanner. Very exciting!

As I’m heading to New Orleans for the American Association of Orthodontists annual meeting, I can’t help but think of the first .info meeting in attended 30 years ago in Orlando. It was a life changing meeting. I passed the written exam for American Board of Orthodontics certification, I bought new equipment for my soon to be open office and I watched the Formula 1 race that was on that weekend. During the race, the greatest F1 driver of that time lost his life. Ayrton Senna was a model of determination and grit to achieve one’s dreams, and an inspiration to me to give my all in everything I do. Just a small remembrance for a great F1 pilot. There’s a reason I named one of my dogs after him! .

After a short but very week, including a quick trip to Springfield to talk about teledentistry, I’m off to the AAO annual meeting. There I will learn about current orthodontic ideas and products to come back prepared to give the best treatment possible to my patients. After all, it’s really all about them!

Spending part of my morning in Springfield at the Capital to testify before a committee on teledentistry. Always exciting to make sure that patient interests are being protected.

The last few days I have been in DC for ADA and have had a great time presenting, talking with colleagues, and discussing ways to help patients and the profession. Im looking forward to meeting with my Illinois legislators about important issues tomorrow. I do wish I was home to see the eclipse in its (near) totality. Happy to see some of my staff enjoying the eclipse.

We have an internet and phone interruption this afternoon. We apologize for any inconvenience in trying to reach us. We will update when the outage is corrected.

Today, I was in Springfield to testify before a senate committee on tele-dentistry, which went very well. I’d like to thank my patients for being so understanding for the short notice to cancel their appointments this afternoon. I believe that participating in the legislative process helps to ensure that patients in Illinois are protected.

Sorry, I have been remiss in posting patient photos lately. We have had so many patients starting and finishing their treatments.

We will remain closed for the remainder of the day. Still slick outside and I would prefer that everyone remain safe. We will be calling tomorrow to reschedule everyone’s appointment.

An exciting new chapter for the ADA!

ADA Science & Research Institute to combine with Forsyth Institute The ADA and the Forsyth Institute announced Oct. 26 the formation of the ADA Forsyth Institute.

Today we wear orange and take part in as we join together with American Association of Orthodontists and other fellow orthodontists in the fight against bullying. At Markarian Orthodontics, we stand up against bullying today and everyday and strive to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all.

Now that I’m finally home, rested, and back to my routine, I can reflect on my time in Orlando.

It was a busy 9 days spent with the American Dental Association at their annual SmileCon Convention paired with our House of Delegates.

I enjoyed reconnecting with my dental friends from around the country, making new connections with colleagues that value what the ADA offers to members and the public, and helping to forge the policy and direction that the ADA takes to maintain the profession and advocate for patients.

I am especially happy to be chairing a special committee (for another year) on dental insurance reform that will benefit all.

Now back to seeing patients and prepping for the next set of meetings!
