With below freezing temperatures approaching, people often ask us how to shut the water off to their home or business if they have a leak.
First, you want to go to your water meter. Typically, the meter box is located near the road and is a black box that is in the ground.
When you open the box, you will see something similar to what is in the picture below. To shut the water off to your house, simply turn the k**b (marked customer shutoff valve in the picture) to where the k**b is turned perpendicular to the pipe (as shown in the photo below.) Once you have repaired the leak, you can turn the water back on by turning it back horizontal with the pipe. Please note, any leaks between the meter and the customerβs house is the customerβs responsibility.
If the leak is inside of the meter or on the other side of the meter, please contact the Calera Water Department at 205-668-3500. If it is after hours, you will select option 1 to report a water emergency. You will then be connected to a dispatcher who can notify the on-call water department employee to respond.

When talking about wind speeds and the graphics we share, keep in mind the graphic we have been sharing is the GUST. That is not the sustained wind speed. The sustained wind speeds are the winds you feel all the time. By definition, it's the 2 minute wind. But a wind gust is a sporadic, short lived increase in speed. So while the gust is in the 40-45 mph tonight, you may only see those strong wind speeds sporadically, while you experience 30-35 mph winds on a more continuous basis.
I would be remiss if I did not say: Remember wind safety. There is such a thing. Pay attention to the weather. Areas away from the edge of your house are safer than areas such as top floor right next to a tree that has been a source of concern every high wind event. Cars are not safe and do not protect from trees falling.
This is all said out of a desire for awareness and precaution. Do not PANIC about this wind, but be cautious and ready to take action if need be. A lot of rain + a lot of wind = nervous meteorologists.
Also, the winds behind the front are expected to weaken for a couple of hours, but then pick back up! By late Tuesday morning, winds should strengthen with gusts in the 30-35 mph range (or higher in a few places) through the rest of the day.
We mention this because if trees are down, power is out, or if there is flash flooding, there might be people out, whether that be rescue crews, people with chainsaws, power crews, or general curious minds. It will still be windy. Wind should start to weaken Tuesday night.
