Eugene S. Smith Post 175 American Legion
Eugene S. Smith was born in Greenlawn, NY in 1888. Smith joined the army during World War I at the age of 30. He had been wounded and was taken prisoner.
His large family, four brothers and five sisters, moved to Syosset, NY in 1902 where his father became the superintendent of the Syosset Pickle Works. He was shipped to France as a member of the 106th Infantry. He was reported missing in action during the second assault on the Hindenburg Line. He later died in a German Hospital on October 20, 1918, twenty two days before the war ended. A fallen hero from Syosset, Eugene Smith was chosen as the namesake of The American Legion Post 175.
