This year’s Pioneer Public Service Awardee is New York Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. We were fortunate to spend time with her discussing the issue of inadequate availability of affordable housing in New York and across the country. Her comments and potential solutions provide a historical guidepost to follow, dating back to World War II.

Last week, I had the pleasure of being surrounded by friends, family, clients, and colleagues as I celebrated my time in the financial industry. An achievement not taken lightly, as many in this position before me were not fortunate to have made it this far. We enjoyed great food and drinks, shared laughs, and established connections. And while we enjoyed the company of one another most of the night, I also wanted to make sure to communicate a message…
Life is not a challenge or struggle that one must face alone. Everyone needs a team, whether they realize it or not. A team of people who advocate for you in times of need and in times of opportunity. For every problem you may have, there is someone out there capable of helping you through it. Being aware of this is the first step. The next step between where you are financially and where you want to be is proper financial planning. Identifying your path to success and building your team should start now. All it takes is the first conversation to begin progressing towards your goals. And as a resource for our community, I encourage you all to reach out to get a better understanding of where you are and where you can be!

Do Our Biases Affect Our Financial Choices? Even the most seasoned investors have biases affecting their financial choices.
Last week I had the privilege and honor to attend the Conference of African American Financial Professionals held by The American College of Financial Services.
Across three days, in the beautiful city of Washington DC, I spent my time meeting and networking with fellow professionals. Despite traveling from all over the country, it was amazing to feel the power in all of us having so many shared experiences and the same aspirations when it comes to the financial industry. As a young, Black advisor from a severely poverty-stricken town, it was overwhelmingly energizing to hear so many different perspectives on how we all could work to change the trajectory of our future.
For far too long, the issues that plague our communities have been overlooked. And while the mere fact of the number of Black financial professionals in attendance at CAAFP shows that we have come a long way, we still have much further to go. It is going to take a concerted effort from all of us to make sure that we lead our communities to a place where we’re not just surviving, but thriving! I am glad to have spent my time learning how to better service clients, especially when they have specific needs that are tied to their communities.
I am dedicated to learning more…this is only the beginning!
