Our stand decorating contest. 9 stands. Teachers had a very difficult decision. Winner is in the comments.
Some catch up posts from the end of '23. Here are the rest of the adventures of Holly Berry, our elf in the band room.
A HUGE Congratulations to the Henninger Music Department on their performance at last night's Winter Concert. To my band students...I could not ask for anymore than what you gave last night. I am just so stinkin' proud of each and every one of you!!! ❤️🎶❤️
While also being very active in the Music and Drama Dept! Way to go Veronica!!
SCSD Career and Technical Education programs aim to empower students with the technical, academic, and professional leadership skills that will prepare them for college and career success. We’re proud to spotlight our students who are hoping to pursue careers in the pathways that they have studied in high school!
Today, learn about Henninger High School senior Veronica Polhamus, who has studied in her school’s Health Professions P-TECH program. Veronica hopes to pursue a Physical Therapy program through a college that will give her a pathway into earning her Doctorate so she can one day become a Physical Therapist!
“My favorite thing about the Health Professions program was participating in the Medical Terminology for Diverse Students (MEDS) program at Upstate Medical University. We got to work with medical students to explore many different pathways, and I got to learn so many new things about the medical field. This program has allowed me to take college courses that will set me ahead, including Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, and others. These classes are huge stepping stones toward earning a medical degree. Not only do I feel like I have been set ahead when it comes to schooling, I have also had so many glimpses into the field, and I’ve met a lot of people who already work in that industry. This experience has really set me up with connections to lead me to a bigger future!”
We wish you all the best, Veronica! To learn more about the CTE programs offered in the SCSD, visit https://www.syracusecityschools.com/districtpage.cfm?pageid=2980.
We have had a guest in the Band Room. Holly Berry has gotten into mischief this holiday season. Starting a few weeks ago, our band students have been helping her get into things or places she really shouldn't be. But rumor has it she is enjoying herself and LOVES the music she is hearing. Keep on the lookout for Holly these next few weeks.
Happy Thanksgiving to all! I am an EXTREMELY thankful Band Director, that is for sure! 🖤💛🦃💛🖤
Thank you Quinn Mason!!! Great experiences at Henninger High School!!!!!!! Not again. Better!
More from our experience
Another special day in the Henninger Band Room. Today we hosted Quinn Mason, conductor and composer. Mr. Mason has conducted such ensembles as the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra and, this weekend, our own Symphoria.
He spent time with our young musicians and worked with our students on one of their pieces we are performing for our Winter Concert. Great advice and input. We are truly blessed to have this opportunity. A nice, talented young gentleman. Special thank you to Nicholas Radford and Rory Edwards for making this musical connection for us.
Today the Henninger Music Department hosted a guest artist, Brendan Slocumb. Mr. Slocumb is an author, violinist and music educator. He shared his stories, struggles and successes with us. Believe in you and yes you can!
Thank you to the Friends of Central Library for providing this opportunity to our young musicians!
Words can not even express the pride I have in the Henninger/SCSD musicians after spending most of this past weekend with them. Friday and Saturday was the SCSD Jazz Festival; Saturday night the Pride of Syracuse Marching Band made their premiere performance in the NYSFBC community at the Phoenix Firebird Fantasy and then Sunday performed at the Eastwood 5-mile Run. I MUST BE the proudest Band Director EVER!!!!!
And Henninger REPRESENTS!!! 🖤💛🖤

The Bond that is already building.
This ensemble put together a 2 minute drill with 18 sets together in 2 rehearsals. This included basics, music and setting their spots.

"Marching Band allows me to have new experiences and see that I can do different things with the clarinet other than just concert band,” Henninger High School senior Ja’Niyah Lacey, who has been playing clarinet and bass clarinet since 4th grade, said. “I’m proud to know that this is the start of something that could really grow to be something bigger in the future!”
Thanks to a unique opportunity, about a dozen SCSD middle and high school students came together to form the District’s first-ever marching band. SCSD high schools including PSLA at Fowler High School and Henninger have offered ‘parade bands’ through the years – together marching in local parades. But as a marching band, the possibilities open for the students to perform on-field routines, as well as compete in a state championship each fall.
