💧TACOMA’S WATER IS AT THREAT 💧

During tonight’s city council meeting where the South Tacoma Groundwater Protection District was being discussed the city manager casually mentioned a 1,000 gallon ethanol spill that happened earlier today on East D St near the Center for Urban Waters.

The spill was a result of a truck colliding with a BNSF traub carrying the chemical. The Center for Urban Waters building had to be evacuated and according to the City Manager’s update, clean up has yet to be started.

A review of the scanner showed one fire operator confirming that the spill is near a sewer drain causing ethanol to make contact with wastewater.

Tacoma’s water is also threatened by projects such as the Mega Warehouse that was approved within the area that is supposed to be protected by the STGPD. This project directly impacts the aquifer recharge area by adding 100,000 yards of concrete, an impervious surface, to the site, preventing water flow & filtration.

The Mega Warehouse is also estimated to bring ~10,000 more truck and vehicle trips a day, raising the risk of collisions and chemical spills, and impacting the roads that taxpayers pay to upkeep. The STGPD moratorium should be on ALL development, including the Mega Warehouse, until after the STGPD code has been appropriately updated.

CASS loves prairies! They are an unrecognized icon of the South Sound.

Over thousands of years, glaciers carved out a cradle where our ecosystems evolved and nutured new life. Remnants of those glaciers still exist today, and continue to sustain us with life-giving drinking water. On a clear day you can see the white glaciers on Mt. Tahoma.

We are thankful for the natural world that brings us endless wonder and nourishment. That's why we fight so hard to protect it!

And that's why we think should get out of our neighborhoods and leave our dwindling green space alone!!

We're honored to be organizing with and for a nationwide walkout tomorrow! Now is the time to act and demand the University of Washington end it's collaboration with Boeing and the military industrial complex. The U.S. military is the biggest polluter in the world! Freedom for the Palestinian people is environmental justice.
We will meet on the UWT campus at the big staircase and march from there.
We will not rest until the people are free! Victory to the Palestinian resistance!

It's important to understand how massive developments, like the mega warehouse complex, could impact what is important to us.
