4-H parents talk about how the program helped them strengthen their bond with their children.

"4-H has really impacted the relationship with my daughter and I. It's caused us to work together to learn together, to grow together. When I want her to do something that she needs to learn, I get to learn it with her. And it's strengthened that relationship between the both of us." - 4-H parent

WSU 4-H dog program facilitates youth learning and social development Watch the full video here: https://loom.ly/cr-DLXw “I have not only learned a ton about taking care of a dog and training a dog, but also the responsibilities of life.” The WSU 4-H dog program supports youth in developing accountability, showmanship, and animal care. At the Pierce County Fair last summer, 4-H'ers Wyatt and Marlowe showed their dogs Pepper and Sunny, respectively. Dog projects available to 4-H members include agility, care and training, service dog, and obedience. All ages are welcome to join and participate in a dog project. The dog project is for youth who are interested in learning more about dogs, how to care for a dog, and how to train a dog in basic or advanced commands. “I've learned more about handling your dog correctly, and the connection is really special. Some of the skills I think I've improved on are like showmanship. It's a really fun experience, especially if you love dogs,” said Marlowe. She explained that her training skills have improved with practice and over time she has become a better handler. A 2017 study on the impact of 4-H dog programs found that “4-H dog club involvement was associated with greater stress management, scholastic competence, and global self-worth scores...compared with school-group youth not involved in 4-H activities. Involvement in 4-H dog clubs was also associated with greater stress management scores compared with involvement in other types of 4-H clubs” (Ellsworth et al). There are dog clubs located in Tacoma, Puyallup, Gig Harbor, Lacamas, Roy, Eatonville, Graham, and Central Pierce County. Wyatt shared that by participating in dog 4-H she has bonded more with Pepper and made a lot of new friends. She recommends 4-H to youth because “you don't only build a relationship and a fun time with your dog, but also tons of fun memories with people around you,” Wyatt said. According to the study, “the presence of a

Sara the dairy goat wins Best in Show at the Pierce County Fair Full Video: https://loom.ly/dDvtarA “You get to learn a lot about the animal itself and you can create bonds with animals, and I feel like that's important,” said 4-H member Leah. 4-H animal projects help youth learn about the life cycle, growth and feeding of animals. In the process, they learn about animal selection and evaluation, nutrition and feeding, animal health, daily care, reproduction and marketing. Leah showed her goat, Sara, at the Pierce County Fair last summer. Sara competed against another goat in her breed and won, and she then went on to win Best of Show. Leah shared that showing is a challenge and “you train your goat to walk with you and stand and like how to set up so they're not like moving all over the place,” she said. According to “What is the Real Purpose of 4-H Livestock Projects”, youth livestock programs are considered model programs for development. The purpose of 4-H animal projects is to teach young people how to feed, fit and exhibit their animals. The most important purpose is to provide an opportunity for personal growth and development. Leah’s goat has the Housley breed characteristics judges were looking for. Sara is a dairy goat and must be milked twice a day! Leah explained you must make sure your goat is fed and has access to fresh water and hay. "I’ve improved on showmanship and judging the animal and how to talk to the public and educate them,” said Leah. Goat projects are available for our Junior, Intermediate, and Senior 4-Hers, except for the Pygmy Goat project which is available for all ages. Available goat projects include Food and Fiber: breeding, dairy, and market as well as Companion and Performance: Novelty, Pygmy, and Utility. “I think 4-H is a good program because it teaches kids responsibility for the animals and how to communicate with people and make new friends,” said Leah. The ultimate purpose or major goal o

Winona
The 4-H horse program reduces stress and helps youth develop life skills Full Video: https://loom.ly/cpQO6rM 4-H is the youth development education program of Washington State University Extension, which is conducted jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington State University, and Pierce County. 4-H member Winona is involved in the horse program with Breeze, an Arabian. Horse projects are available to our Junior, Intermediate, and Senior 4-Hers, except for Horseless Horse, which is for all ages. “I like the 4-H program because you get to ride,” she said. Involvement in 4-H helps youth open to new experiences and gain confidence by taking care of and showing their animals. Before joining 4-H, some members struggle with self-confidence and feel socially awkward. Making friends in the program and learning new things are two ways youth can feel like a valued group member. There are three official Horse projects available to 4-H members: horse, horse judging, and horseless horse. “I like spending 4-H with family because I like spending time with my horse,” said Winona. Research has shown that riding, handling, and caring for a horse helps youth develop patience, responsibility, accountability, level-headedness, kindness, empathy, and self-discipline. If a youth is thinking about joining 4-H, Winona recommends becoming a member because it is a great program. “Kids build life skills through hands-on learning,” she said. A study conducted by WSU found that the stress hormone ‘cortisol’ is measured at lower levels in children who participate in equestrian activities. The discipline and grit required to excel at any equestrian sport also can influence how students view things like homework and life goals (Horsing around). Gretchen & Lillian
Lillian shows cats and poultry in Four Ever Green 4-H Full Video: https://loom.ly/iDfOFuA “I would recommend 4-H because it's a fun program. Where you get to learn a lot and have fun and work together with other people. So we recommend it to all kinds of people to get involved. In whatever sorts of projects or activities they're interested in,” said 4-H mom Gretchen. Gretchen was a 4-H member in her youth and spent 10 years showing horses. The experiences she had made her want her children to be involved in 4-H to have the same opportunities as she did. “The impact of 4-H with the relationship with my children is we get to spend more time together going to the 4-H meetings and learning about the projects together,” she said. The 4-H Companion and Performance cat project helps youth explore what breed of cat fits into their family’s lifestyle. Cats require affection and quality care to live long, and healthy lives and the cat project teaches 4-H'ers about nutritional aspects of a cat’s diet, health, biology, and responsible pet ownership. Lillian is a 4-H member and Gretchen's daughter. Her mom enjoys watching Lillian learn independence and teamwork. “They're really learning a lot of positive skills that can take them in lots of different places,” said Gretchen. By studying animals and learning about their projects, 4-H members are able to speak to the public and share their knowledge. “I think it's a good program for me because I get to learn about animals and how to take care of them. I love cats and dogs, chickens and horses and I just love all animals,” said Lillian. 4-H cat projects are open to all age divisions including Cloverbuds. Animals must be under the management and care of the 4-H member 60 days prior to fair. Cats must provide a completed, signed WSU Rabies Vaccination Certificate showing proof of current distemper series with chlamydia and proof rabies vaccination to enter at fair. Cats may be purebred or crossbred and

4-H celebrates cultural diversity with classical Cambodian dance! Full Video: https://loom.ly/ZSlbf2g “I want to share a little bit of my cultural experience with 4-H and especially the dancing, I love the dancing,” said 4-H member Somika. For more than 100 years, 4‑H has been the nation’s leading youth organization to welcome young people of all beliefs and backgrounds, giving youth voice to express who they are and how they make their lives and communities better. Somika Heng is involved in many 4-H projects including sewing and cooking. She shares classical Cambodian dance by showing the different movements and choreography. “And then the one where you put your right hand in front of your chest and then wrap them around your right wrist,” said Somika. “I really like that one because in the song it says Zhong Dai, which means tie hands.” This 4-H Extension system initiative focuses on understanding implicit bias, cultural competency, social justice development, and youth development. The purpose of the Washington State 4-H Teen Equity and Inclusion Task Force is to facilitate and support an inclusive 4-H youth organization. Using compassion and empathy, it strives to create an open and safe environment to celebrate and embrace our diversity. “I would recommend 4-H because the people here are awesome. We all fit in together. It's awesome, it’s the best thing,” said Somika. #4hgrowshere #classicalcambodiandance #dei #diveristy #equity #inclusion

4-H member Claire shows her rabbit at the Pierce County Fair Full Video: https://loom.ly/wBHM4gw Rabbits come in various breeds and uses include companion, fiber, and meat production. In the rabbit project, 4-H'ers make new friends while learning the proper care, handling, and knowledge of their animal. “I chose to show rabbits because there's just a caring nature about them. They're really soft and they're pretty easy to show,” said 4-H member Claire. Claire brought her rabbit Sebastian, a mini Holland Lop mix, to show at the Pierce County Fair last summer. To prepare for the fair, Claire brought his food, water, and grooming tools so he would be well cared for and presentable. Her family brought camping gear so they could stay at the fairgrounds. “Our club will meet and the rabbit leader, she'll go through it step by step and she'll describe how to show the rabbit,” said Claire. Rabbit and Cavy are open to all age divisions including Cloverbuds. Project animals must be under the management and care of the 4-H member 45 days prior to fair. Rabbits and Cavies may be purebred or crossbred. Animals must be vet-checked prior to the fair and must be free of parasites and diseases. There are no specific vaccinations required. “In 4-H, I have learned a bunch of leadership skills and how to rephrase questions and turn it into an answer,” said Claire. “I would recommend 4-H to other kids. It's a great learning experience!” The current Rabbit and Cavy projects available include food and fiber, breeding, market, companion, and performance. 4-H Member Janelle shows guinea pigs at the Pierce County Fair FULL VIDEO: https://loom.ly/bEieQgQ This year at the Pierce County Fair 4-H member Janelle showed her guinea pigs as a part of her cavy project. She is a member of Four Ever Green 4-H and brought three guinea pigs to the show. “I've learned how to take care of them. And like what specifically they need in life. Showing is different with them, like a lot different than other animals,” said Janelle. Cavies, commonly known as guinea pigs, are adorable companion animals. Although timid, they generously give affection and require less care than large animals or livestock. Through this project, youth reap many rewards including responsibility, leadership, confidence, and professionalism. The cavy group are popular pets due to their docile, gentle manner and cute, round appearance. When youth show their cavies, judges are looking for 4-H'ers who show that they care for the health of the animal, can identify different characteristics, and understand the animal’s biology and needs. “Well, what we're showing, they usually do it on our knowledge of our breed, like in our animal, like how much we know of the kind of animal we have, like the guinea pigs,” said Janelle. Rabbits and cavies may be purebred or crossbred at shows and are vet checked prior to fair entry to confirm they are free of parasites and diseases. 4-H members participating in a cavy or rabbit animal science project learn to be responsible and keep good records. Practicing best management while raising an animal gives members the opportunity to engage in science-based, hands-on education. Janelle has mande many friends in 4-H and recommends that other youth join. “It's helped me a lot with my public speaking and like making like talking to people,” she said. Rabbit and Cavy are open to all age divisions including Cloverbuds and project animals must be under the management and care of the 4-H member 45 days prior to fair. 4-

4-H Parents
4-H Parents are key to a successful 4-H club! FULL VIDEO: https://loom.ly/o03uZfc 4-H is a family commitment. Parents of 4-H members are an important part of every program. Family support provides the base of club support and provides the opportunity for club growth. Active parents are the foundation of active members. One 4-H parent’s daughter is a member of Four Ever Green 4-H and has a poultry project. Nikki shares that working on the chicken project together has allowed them to become closer as mother and daughter. She attends her daughter’s shows at the fair and they go to open shows together. “Within our flock, it's something we both work on together as far as choosing which breeds, we want to have, what eggs we want to incubate,” said Nikki. “And so, we've really become a team with all of this, and 4-H has really helped with that.” Favorable Attitudes + Parent Interests + Active Parent Cooperation = Successful 4-H Clubs! (University of New Hampshire 4-H Extension https://loom.ly/JMNtKoc) “I think for me, when I grew up doing 4-H, it gave me a lot of opportunities. It gave me a lot of chances to try and do things that I'd never done before and one of the things was getting out of my shell and talking to people and exposing myself to public presentation and interaction with the public,” said 4-H dad Tony. He participated in 4-H when he was younger and now encourages his children in their goat projects. “Being able to share that with my kids now is a really special thing,” said Tony. “4-H really impacted the relationship with my daughter and I. It's caused us to work together, to learn together, to grow together,” said 4-H mom Alta. 4-H is a family activity that offers multiple occasions where both parent and child can participate in a common interest which strengthens family ties. Active parent participation broadens the impact of the 4-H program at the local and county levels (UNH 4-H). “When I want her to do something tha

4-H member Renee shows alpacas, sheep, and goats at the Pierce County Fair FULL VIDEO: https://youtu.be/IXtX5yZj5Nc “You’re surrounded by people who love what they do and who want to teach you all about their passion,” said 4-H member Renee at the Pierce County Fair. Renee has been a member of 4-H for a few years and enjoys showing her alpacas Zac and Max, sheep, and goats. Pierce County 4-H offers many animal projects, including livestock and companion animals. The 4-H alpaca/llama projects aid youth in developing an understanding of care, breeding, and showing of the animals. In this project, 4-H members learn about breeding techniques, animal ownership and responsibilities, and fiber and meat marketing. “I have learned from my 4-H experience about how to take care of animals, how to show them, and how to educate the public about them,” said Renee. 4-H animal projects help youth learn about the life cycle and growth of animals. In the process of caring for them, 4-h'ers learn about animal selection and evaluation, nutrition and feeding, animal health, daily care, reproduction and marketing. “4-H has helped me with my future education by allowing me to think about things in new ways and work with a team and problem solve,” said Renee. “The skills I have improved on in 4-H are my public speaking skills.” Through 4-H, youth improve upon vital life skills including hard work, responsibility, critical thinking and decision-making. 4-H’ers also learn leadership skills, communication, organizational skills, and record keeping. “4-H has prepared me for a job by letting me interact with different types of people in a professional manner,” said Renee. The vision of the WSU Pierce County 4-H program is to assist young people to become productive citizens who are engaged in positive change in order to meet the needs of a diverse and changing society. “I would recommend 4-H because you learn lots of stuff, you make lots of friends, a
