For National Authors Day, we caught up with a cherished RedEye regular and local author, Leslie Noyes! 📖❤️

For over three years, Leslie has been a friendly face at RedEye. She started coming in after the pandemic, and since then, our café has become her “home office.” Rarely does a day go by without her enjoying a hot almond milk chai in our cozy alcove, typing away on her latest story. 👩‍💻☕️ Today, we’re excited for her to share more about her writing journey, inspirations, and rituals. Here’s what Leslie had to say:

📚 Tell us a little about your Happy Valley series—what inspired you to write it?
Leslie: "It all started with a glass of wine on my porch in Illinois. The entire title popped into my head! Weeks later, the name Paula Jean Arnett came to me—something bad happened to her, and I needed to fix it! After moving to Tallahassee, I took a creative writing course. Though COVID cut it short, my instructor encouraged me to keep going. After fourteen years, I published Happy Valley Motor Inn and Resort in November 2020. I’ve since published six more books in the series!"

📚 Who are some authors or books that have influenced your writing?
Leslie: "I read everything! I’m a huge Stephen King fan. I also love Sci-Fi by Adrian Tchaikovsky, Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, and Jennifer Crusie, who is so darn funny."

📚 Do you have any “writing superstitions” or rituals you swear by?
Leslie: "I have to solve the Wordle puzzle every day before I start writing. It clears my head and helps me focus. If I ever feel stuck, I take a beach day at St. George Island."

📚 If you could spend a day with any character from your book, who would it be, and what would you do together?
Leslie: "There’s a character named Martha in her 70s who says whatever the heck she’s thinking. I’d love to spend the day with her! We’d go shopping, people-watch, and make up stories about everyone. Martha always says what I’m thinking."

📚 What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey, and how did you work through it?
Leslie: "Being able to accept my editor’s advice. I’d cry after getting her notes. Most of the time, she’s right, and now I see how much my editor, Rachel, saves me from doing things that don’t work.”

📚 What’s one piece of advice you have for fellow writers or those wanting to start?
Leslie: "Read. And read some more. Just start writing! Anyone who really wants to write needs to sit down and begin. Find a good editor. You can’t edit a blank page, so if you don’t start, you can’t improve."

Before we wrapped up, Leslie shared one final thought: “support your favorite authors, especially indie authors!” She emphasized how impactful a review on platforms like Amazon or Goodreads can be. Small acts of encouragement like this can empower authors to keep writing and inspire future stories! Dale is one of our incredible Midtown Leads and she's done an amazing job of keeping things flowing smoothly, even on super busy days. After working in the coffee world for almost 10 years, she's become an invaluable part of our froggy fam over the last nine months. ❤️

Outside of work, Dale loves to thrift and you can usually find her at an estate sale on weekend mornings! She also loves to watch horror moves, during spooky season and year-round. 😱

Dale shared: "My favorite part about working at RedEye is my coworkers. Everyone has been super nice from the moment that I met them, and they are all always working so hard. They all just make me happy to be a part of such a fun and caring team."

Independence Landing is celebrating their first anniversary!❤️

We’re so grateful that RedEye has such an incredible organization behind it. All of our proceeds help IL provide safe and affordable housing for adults with disabilities to live independently. And their residents are absolutely thriving. 🙌 Cheers to many more years of IL!

Today is the one year anniversary of our very first resident moving in to Independence Landing. 🎉 What an absolutely amazing year it's been!

Our community is now a safe, affordable, and fun place to live for so many people. This year has been full of beautiful friendships, so many exciting new programs and offerings, and countless special moments.

Independence isn't just a part of our name, it's the reason we're here. Providing the opportunity for residents to live independently has changed their lives. One of our residents, Ryan (A.K.A Mr. Nose) shared "Independence means being able to do things on your own, taking care of yourself. I have the chance to make good choices." Another resident, Daniel, said "Independence means everything to me. I get to choose what I do, on my own time. I can do anything I want."

We are sincerely grateful for all of people who have helped make this dream of independence come true. ❤️

Today, we honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Native American communities. 🌾✨ Let's take a moment to reflect and appreciate the land we’re on and the deep connections to those who came before us.

Did you know Tallahassee is home to one of the most important Native American archaelogical sites in Florida?

”More than eight centuries ago, Native Americans inhabited the area around Lake Jackson, just north of Tallahassee. The park site was part of what is now known as the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex.

Today the park preserves the remains of six of the seven known earthen temple mounds. The largest mound is 278 feet by 312 feet at the base and approximately 36 feet in height. The village at the base of these mounds was a cultural, religious and population center in 1100-1500 AD.” (Florida State Parks)

The Native American group associated with the Lake Jackson Mounds State Park is known as the Fort Walton culture, a southern expression of the Mississippian culture. This group is believed to be the ancestors of the Apalachee tribe, who later inhabited the region and continued many of their traditions, including mound-building and advanced agriculture.
