Last Friday, the Florida Art Therapy Association, FSU Art Therapy Professor Dr. David Gussak, and SATA at FSU hosted the Art Therapy Advocacy Event!
This event recognized legislative efforts towards House Bill 51, which would grant licensure to qualified and credentialed art therapists in Florida. This would ensure safe practices while keeping art therapists in Florida!
Honored guest and Florida State Representative, Allison Tant, addressed those in attendance and spoke highly of the Art Therapy field and how the field can change the future of mental health services in the state of Florida. Representative Tant, representatives of the Florida Art Therapy Association and the American Art Therapy Association, as well as, FSU faculty were greeted by current and alum art therapy students as we advocate for our licensure!
We thank everyone in attendance, especially our honored guest Representative Tant, for not only believing in the field but for also continuing to advocate for its licensure in the state of Florida.
This Week at SATA!
This past week at SATA, members took part in two events on campus. The first event was part of Art in the Library series. SATA members volunteered to provide art experiences for guests in collaboration with the current exhibition in the Paul Dirac Library, “Inner Worlds Outer Expressions”. Big thanks to SATA members, Cheyenne & Kristina, for taking the lead on this event!
Our second event was our monthly self-care event. This month we tie-dyed this year’s SATA member custom t-shirts!
Happy Veterans Day!
Today, we are highlighting 1st year student and U.S. Navy Veteran, Jes Fields’ thoughts on being a veteran and the use of art therapy with veterans:
“As a veteran, some of my experiences are extremely challenging to describe with words. Many of my fellow veterans have experienced difficulties such as sexual assault, trauma, cancer, grief, PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
Art therapy allows us to make art pieces that express those feelings and experiences in a tangible and accessible way, even when we struggle to discuss them. Even if we think we aren’t “artistic” or “creative.” And especially when we need a new way to see and work through things in our lives.”
Happy Native American Heritage Month! SATA at FSU wishes everyone a month full of gaining knowledge on working with the Native American population. We will continue to post information and resources in order to continue advocating for culturally competent care!
For this month’s we are highlighting SATA’s very own Fundraising and Intersectional Chair, Khalia Kennedy. We congratulate Khalia on receiving the Rawley Silver Award for Excellence from the American Art Therapy Association at the conference.
This award is presented to a student member of AATA whose academic record or prior experience is considered excellent and who is accepted or enrolled in a graduate art therapy program.
Here at SATA we are beyond proud of Khalia and are not surprised by her many successes. Please join us in congratulating Khalia!!

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and SATA would like to recognize that by encouraging businesses to hire people with disabilities! This community made up a significant part of those unemployed in 2022, affecting their accessibility to resources and basic needs.
This year’s theme for NDEAM is Advancing Access and Equity so SATA would like to highlight a great resource for everyone out there to know about! The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is a website that is very accessible and provides resources and accommodations in the workplace for hundreds of disabilities and limitations. These resources are available to persons with disabilities/limitations, as well as, employers.
This week at SATA!
Busy week at SATA as the semester begins to fully take off. We started the week with a self-care event for our cohorts at FSU’s The Rez. A nice day at the lake, making natural mandalas was a fun way to wind down.
This week we also held two community outreach events! We teamed up with FSU Best Buddies for their annual buddy matching party and facilitated a beaded bracelet making event for the buddy pairs.
As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, we also set up a table at the Leon County Sheriff’s Office’s Hispanic Resource Fest where we facilitated art making for participants. Art making involved Mexican Mirror Affirmation Art.

Today we are spotlighting Puerto Rican Art Therapist Wayne Ramirez!
Ramirez is an art therapy pioneer and has been a member of the Art Therapy Association since its inception. He is known to be one of the first registered art therapist in the United States. An advocate for the expansion of art therapy practices outside of psychiatric settings like community art therapy, disaster relief response, and special education, Ramirez
Renovated a bus to create the Arts Mobile after Hurricane Hugo left the Virgin Islands devastated in 1989.
Join us in celebrating Wayne by sharing your stories of community/disaster relief art therapy!
Happy National Hispanic Heritage Month! This month we will be spotlighting Hispanic Art Therapists, as well as, posting facts about the Hispanic community and how we as art therapists can better inform ourselves on this community to better serve them.
