"It is a bitter irony for all that our deaths, and even our victories, are mocked by the life that goes on around us in polar opposite of our own sentiment, when all we really want to do is join poet W. H. Auden and cry, “Stop all the clocks!” . . . But time does not stand still, for our joy or for our grief. How do we pray, how do we celebrate, when death comes unexpectedly, when a disease is mean and swift, when an unthinkable accident occurs, when we lose someone who was not ready or willing to let go, and who we were not ready to bless on their way? It is not a gift here, this Death, but a miss, and there is no remedy for the pain and misery left in its wake. I will not attempt to make it right with trite words, for that would belittle your pain. Instead, I say we can rely only on the presence of God and Immortality to keep us company in the dark carriage."
