We’ve been told by many that we are their ‘third place.’ The concept of the “third place” was popularized by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his book “The Great Good Place.”

It refers to a place that is not your home (first place) or your work/school (second place), but rather a social environment where people can gather, relax, and connect with others in their community.

Third places are essential for social interaction, community building, and a sense of belonging outside of the home and workplace.

🏮Join us at Grassroots Kava in St. Pete TONIGHT (6PM), where we have the upstairs all to ourselves for Wild Mercy. A support group for women (cis, trans, and non-binary).

Each session, bring a thought-provoking topic and kick things off with a brief poem or reading.

Her approach is gentle and somatic, with movement activities tailored to each topic. Occasionally, she will incorporate breathwork, short journaling, and group sharing. Remember, everything is optional—simply being present in this supportive community is enough 🌿.

Juneteenth holds a significant place in our nation’s history, marking the end of slavery and the beginning of a new chapter of freedom for African Americans.

It’s a time for us to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of the Black community, recognizing their resilience and unwavering spirit.

As we commemorate this important day, let’s stand together in solidarity, acknowledging the injustices of the past while striving for a more inclusive and equitable future.

Today we want to shine a spotlight on our bartender, Olivia. A special soul who shares their light with every person they meet and now it’s a time for us to shine the light back on her! 🖤

When asked, “What brought you to the Kava community?” She said, “ I came here with my friend to hangout while they studied and once I saw the grassroots coffee I immediately fell in love. At the time my old job wasn’t giving me the love and care needed and I craved the grassroots environment and energy and asked if they were hiring. Next thing I knew I was apart of not just a community but a family. And it’s been the best decision of my life so far. Coffee is my passion and people are my light here I can express that everyday.”

Reflecting on her time at GRKH and what it means to her, Olivia expressed, “ I started in November of 2023. I always joke around with our name but seriously it’s the people we have and the product we serve that allows someone to place their roots in the world. Many people go through hardships with life and here you can be excepted and not judged but lifted up. Whatever your story is grassroots wants to see your roots. We embrace that so well here. I’m lucky I get to be apart of it not just as a tender but as a guest and friends to others.” 🥹

When asked what her favorite drink was she enthusiastically shared, “My 5 shot (!!!) Twix bar shaken espresso with oat milk. shaken. Not stirred. I am a caffeine fan for life and grew up in a Colombian household with coffee served each hour of the day hahaha”

In closing, Olivia leaves us with a message of resilience and friendship, reminding us, “Life’s journey may have its ups and downs, but always remember that you are never alone. No matter the challenges or stresses you face, know that someone cares for you. We are all warriors navigating through life, and it’s essential to cherish every moment. If you ever need a friend, remember that at grassroots, you can lay your roots, and I’ll be here waiting to welcome you with open arms.” 🌟
