It’s hurricane season & with Tropical Storm Fred expected to linger along our coast, it’s imperative that we be prepared. Here are some preventative measures you can take in the kitchen to prepare for worst case scenario in the event one of these storms causes power outages:
🥶 Keep the temperature in the fridge at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. The freezer’s temperature should be 0 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
🧊 Freeze water in one quart storage bags prior to the expected arrival of the storm. These bags will be great to fit around the food (in both the fridge & freezer) to keep everything cold.
❄️ Freeze refrigerated (including milk & leftovers) that you may not need immediately. Also, group foods together in the freezer which will help the food stay colder longer.
🚪 Keep the fridge & freezer doors closed as much as possible. A fridge will keep cold for approximately four hours if the door is kept closed. A freezer will hold its temperature approximately 24-48 hours when the door is kept closed.
🆒 Have coolers on hand to keep refrigerated items cold just in case the power is out for more than a few hours.
🥫Have a few days worth of ‘ready to eat foods & canned goods’ on hand.
