Parathyroid Disease Awareness Group: Norman Parathyroid Center
High blood calcium is caused by hyperparathyroidism, affecting 250,000 people per year in the US, 75% women, most over 40 years old. Let's educate and help!
Patients with hyperparathyroidism gather, learn, educate, and support each other regarding the diagnosis and treatment of parathyroid disease and high calcium problems. The symptoms are many yet most doctors are not aware that small elevations of blood calcium can affect a person's health and well-being. People interested in parathyroid disease and those going through the often slow diagnostic man
Primary hyperparathyroidism is a destructive disease caused by benign growths of the parathyroid glands. It is is characterized by high parathyroid hormone (PTH) production and causes accelerated bone loss, kidney injury, and it is associated with heart disease and stroke. People with hyperparathyroidism don’t live as long, or as well, as they should.
The mechanisms that control how calcium moves into, out of, and within our bodies are defective in hyperparathyroidism. This usually results in high blood calcium levels, thin bones, and high levels of calcium in the urine. Since calcium plays some role in nearly every bodily function, it is not surprising that many symptoms are associated with hyperparathyroidism.
Although these symptoms are easy to attribute to natural aging and other health issues, early recognition can lead to prompt diagnosis and treatment before serious organ damage.

Most people with parathyroid disease (hyperparathyroidism) will have symptoms when they are diagnosed, and nearly all will develop symptoms if left untreated. Parathyroid disease affects the brain, bones, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, nerves, muscles, blood vessels, and heart. It may even increase the risk of certain cancers.

The Norman Parathyroid Center, a leading institution in the diagnosis and treatment of parathyroid disorders, is spearheading efforts to raise awareness for parathyroid disease throughout the month of July.
The parathyroid glands are four small glands located in the neck behind the thyroid gland that control the amount of calcium in the blood and bones. In nearly one percent of people worldwide, one or more of these glands develop a tumor. These tumors remove calcium from the bones and put it into the blood. High blood calcium is the hallmark of parathyroid disease (hyperparathyroidism) and it is never normal. If a person has high blood calcium, it almost always indicates the presence of a parathyroid tumor.

Have you ever wondered if parathyroid disease is related to the thyroid gland? 🤔 It's a question we get frequently, but despite their similar names and locations, the two serve entirely different functions and are not related.

Happy Friday! Dr. Norman had the pleasure of joining Gayle Guyardo's Bloom program yesterday to speak about Parathyroid Disease Awareness Month.
You can catch the segment on Wednesday, July 24 on WFLA News Channel 8, and we'll also post the full version here for you view.
"Hey doc, your videos are tremendously good in many ways. I love the clear way you explain things, and appreciate you taking the time to educate people on this disease. Thank you for all of your wonderful information. I went there and had my redo parathyroid surgery after a botched local surgery which left me with a paralyzed vocal cord. I found your videos and knew this was the right choice. This is a very delicate operation and only the best and most experienced should be doing it. If you ever need a parathyroid operation, go to Tampa and The Norman Parathyroid Center."
We loved hearing this feedback on Dr. Mitchell's Q&A videos! We'll announce the date for his next session shortly-- in the meantime, if you have questions you'd like him to address, please drop them in the comments below 👇

July is Parathyroid Disease Awareness Month, presenting an opportunity to bring a misunderstood and underdiagnosed disease to the forefront.
Despite the common nature of parathyroid tumors, most people are not familiar with the parathyroid glands, what their purpose is or even where they are located in the body. Many are unaware that high blood calcium means a parathyroid tumor is present. Even some doctors may struggle to make the proper diagnosis.
High blood calcium levels are NEVER normal. Adults over the age of 40 should have calcium levels below 10.0 mg/dl (below 2.5 mmol/l in Canada and the EU). If calcium is high, it means a parathyroid tumor is almost certainly present and the destructiveness of parathyroid disease has already began.

People with calcium levels of 12.5 do NOT have more symptoms or damage than people with calcium of 10.5. It's all about how long the calcium has been high, not the height the calcium reaches.

Q&A
The Norman Parathyroid Center's parathyroid surgery volume is more than 100 times greater than most major hospitals and universities. Volume matters. This is the difference between a general surgeon who occasionally performs parathyroid surgery, and an expert who does dozens of parathyroid operations per day. This is the difference between potential complications and the need for addition surgery, and cure without complications.

“I am so happy I found The Norman Parathyroid Center to address my very specific issues with my parathyroid and thyroid glands! I had gone undiagnosed with hyperparathyroidism and all of the debilitating symptoms for several years, so when I found out at last what needed to be done I went to the best.
It was very fortunate for me to find that it was nearly in my backyard…just a four-hour drive my home in Fort Lauderdale. From my very first phone call to NPC, to my post surgery phone check up with my surgeon, everything went perfectly!
Once my diagnosis was confirmed, I was able to schedule a telephone consult with my surgeon, Dr. Watkins, after which I was able to secure a surgery date within two weeks. What a wonderful relief that was, as prior to my contact with NPC, I was told I would have to wait many months just to see a local endocrinologist, who would then have to refer me to a surgeon. At Norman, this is all that they do. Their surgeons have it down to an exact science, and have all been highly trained to use minimally invasive techniques.
The hospital itself is brand new and beautiful and the staff are all wonderful and everything just works like a well oiled machine. Everyone there was so kind that I almost felt as though I were in some sort of a dream.
The Norman Center partners with several hotels in the airport area, featuring special rates for patients and free transportation to and from the hospital. They also provide patients with a very well designed app which, to me, proved invaluable with regard to managing expectations and answering any questions that I had pre and post surgery!
I cannot recommend Norman Parathyroid Center more highly for what they do and I am so grateful to everyone there who was able to help me... everyone was a true delight! Many thanks and kudos to the Norman Parathyroid Center from a very satisfied customer!"
