If you nurse, you know that nursing is hard on the body. You are on the go for 12 hours, sometimes longer. Many nurses are so focused on caring for others, they forget to think about themselves.
Florida Center for Nursing worked with Florida nurses and a certified personal trainer to create nurse exercises. This is for nurses, future nurses, and anyone who wants to know more about what it takes to nurse.
Today, we start with endurance. A nurse is on their feet for the majority of their shift. In addition to supportive shoes (and socks), core strength is a key factor in maintaining good posture. This helps to ensure a nurse body does not develop back problems.
Nurse Exercise: Overhead Carry
Equipment needed: Shoulder-width item (ex. barbell on trap bar, large first aid kit)
1. Engage core muscles
2. Lift item overhead
3. Keep biceps next to ears, wrists straight
4. Take small steps in one direction until you must turn around (due to a wall or crash cart)
5. Repeat 10-12 times for 3 reps (or until the next code is called)
Practice the Overhead Carry Nurse Exercise 2-3 times a week in order to improve stability and strengthen core and shoulder muscles.

In order to obtain a nursing license, future nurses must complete an approved prelicensure education program. They are then eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
The prelicensure program can be a practical nursing (PN) or registered nursing (RN) program. After completing the program, a candidate must pass the NCLEX-PN or NCLEX-RN to earn their LPN or RN license.
The most recent FCN Nursing Education Program Report identified 322 active prelicensure RN programs and 196 active prelicensure PN programs in Florida. For comparison, Texas had 128 prelicensure RN programs in 2022 and California had ~140 prelicensure RN programs.
