Identifying whether you're in a toxic relationship is an important step toward healing and creating a healthier environment for yourself. Here are four questions that trauma survivors can ask themselves to help assess the health of their relationships:

1️⃣ Am I able to express my feelings and boundaries openly?

Healthy relationships provide a safe space for open communication. If you find it difficult to express your emotions and needs or set boundaries without fear of retribution, it may be a sign of toxicity.

2️⃣ Do I feel supported and valued for who I am?

In a healthy relationship, you should feel valued, respected, and supported for being your authentic self. If you constantly feel belittled, criticized, or dismissed, it could be indicative of a toxic dynamic.

3️⃣ Are there patterns of control, manipulation, or power imbalances?

Toxic relationships often involve power struggles, control tactics, or manipulative behaviors. Reflect on whether there are consistent patterns of one person trying to dominate or manipulate the other.

4️⃣ Do I feel safe physically, emotionally, and psychologically?

Feeling safe in a relationship is crucial. If you ever feel threatened, intimidated, or afraid for your well-being, it's a clear sign that the relationship is unhealthy and potentially toxic.

Remember, trust your instincts and feelings. If something doesn't feel right, it's important to honor that intuition.

If you feel like you are unsafe, please prioritize your safety. If you need help and you are in the U.S., the National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

Additionally, seeking support from a therapist or counselor can provide valuable insights and guidance in navigating these complex situations. They can help you explore your feelings and options, and develop a plan for healing and moving forward.

Find my latest blog link in the bio, where I dive more into the healing from toxic relationships based on different Enneagram types.

Remember, you deserve a relationship that helps you to feel more at home with yourself, not one that takes and taxes from you constantly.

Today, I wanted to take a moment to share a powerful lesson I've learned on my journey working with trauma survivors. It's something that has brought me immense peace and has transformed the way I view myself and my healing process. And that lesson is this: valuing progress over perfection.

Survivors often carry heavy burdens and scars from the past. The journey towards healing is rarely linear, and it's easy to fall into the trap of striving for an ideal version of ourselves or a flawless recovery. But here's the truth: we don't need to be perfect to heal, to grow, or to thrive.

Every step we take, no matter how small, is a victory. It's a testament to the resilience and strength within you. Healing isn't about reaching some unattainable state of flawlessness or a state of ongoing peace; it's about acknowledging the progress you make every day, no matter how tiny or seemingly insignificant.

Sometimes, progress means taking a moment to breathe deeply when anxiety threatens to overwhelm us. It can be reaching out for support, speaking our truth, or seeking therapy. It can also be as simple as getting out of bed when the weight of the world feels too heavy, or even finding solace in a moment of laughter amidst the storm.

Remember, progress doesn't have a finish line. It's a lifelong journey, and every small step we take counts. Let's celebrate our victories, no matter how small, and let them serve as a reminder that we are moving forward, even when it feels like we're standing still.

If you'd like to learn more about what integrating wellness in your daily life can look like, check out my newest blog article that breaks down the difficulty of self-care for trauma survivors and how you can make it work for you.

Trauma can undoubtedly cause a mess. It can become entangled in our lives, wreaking havoc in every way. Much like this mess of trauma - if you handed several three-year-olds a couple of balls of yarn, you would likely end up with a giant mess. It would take time, diligence, and a lot of patience to comb through that mess. Trauma is the same way. It takes time to undo the mess trauma has made. It takes patience, not just with ourselves but also with the process. Gradually, things will become different, but things will only change if you start taking the steps toward healing. Remember - you didn't choose trauma, and you CAN choose your path toward healing.

It's obvious that the more we practice something, the better we get at it. But did you know that by practicing grounding exercises and using coping skills when you aren't having an anxiety attack or a sense of panic, you can teach your body how to regulate itself even better? It's true! Practicing using the coping skills you want to put in effect when you are having a challenging moment can help your brain AND your body to remember it's at your disposal when you need it.

Our bodies are the keepers of all of the stress and trauma our hearts and minds come into contact with. It’s so important to make space to listen to what our body is telling us.

Whether we feel on edge, jittery, weighed down, numb or something else all together - our body is communicating to us what our head and our hearts need.

The fact that healing is never linear can be extremely difficult. But that means that no matter where you are, there is more healing and light that can come through.
