Self-regulation, or the ability to control our emotions and behavior, is an essential life skill that all kids should be taught from an early age, ideally before they go off to school.
Several studies have highlighted the benefits of teaching self-regulation to toddlers, the most prominent of which is a recent paper published by Michigan State University. It states that the sooner children learn to self regulate, the more successful they are in their classroom learning and social life.
We have a great blog post about how to incorporate self-regulation into your everyday activities in a fun way! Want to read it? Go to our blog on our website!

Occupational therapy allows children to be free to live their lives by helping them develop the motor skills needed to write, groom, eat, play, and more. http://ow.ly/o6DO30rS0WU
Stay positive!
As much as you'd love to spend all day helping your child practice their speech skills and overcome their speech delay as quickly as possible - your busy schedule doesn't leave any extra hours for you to push back on. Instead of trying to free up time in your already tight schedule, you can incorporate speech activities into your bedtime routine. Think of moments like nightly reading, bath time, brushing teeth, slipping into pajamas, and tucking in before a good night's sleep. So to help you practice speech activities with your child without hopelessly falling behind on the rest of your schedule.

There's no one way to treat a child. Meaning therapists usually experiment a little to find out which approach will work best for the child. And even after a course is set, changes still may be made to maximize progress. If this is something you would be interested in we would love to hear from you! Give us a call! 480-690-1807

Looking for something to do with the kids this week? We love this suggestion from Traveling Mom's website. She recommended the Hall of Flame Fire Museum!
"There's just something about kids and fire trucks, right? If you're interested in the history of firefighting, this is a can't miss. The Hall of Flame includes more than 90 pieces of firefighting equipment and trucks dating from 1725 to 1960. There's lots of fire memorabilia from the United States and beyond. There's also quite a few hands-on activities, like a station where your kids can dress up like firefighters and sit in a real fire truck.
Be sure to check out the area in the back, that is mocked up like a firehouse, complete with a pole. This area is geared toward preschoolers, but my eight-year-olds had fun with it."

Happy Labor Day!
Are you dancing in the rain?
We think parents should be informed. One reason children come to see us is for verbal apraxia. Here are some of the signs:
Your child has significant inconsistency in their pronunciation. They may pronounce the same word several different ways.
Your child mixes up consonants within a word.
The longer your child speaks, they become more and more intelligible.
Your child will add vowel sounds to the end of words that end in a consonant (example: Up-pa).
Your child may not be able to change their pitch during speech production.
If you want to talk with someone further, please give us a call! 480-690-1807
Is your child's first visit to a pediatric occupational therapist coming up and you have no idea what to expect? Most occupational therapy processes consist of seven main stages that entail the entire journey, from the moment you enter the therapist's office to the time when your child is ready to leave.
Information Gathering. The first part of the process is gathering information on the difficulties your child is experiencing.
The Assessment Stage. After identifying the problem, the next step is to gain a better insight into the difficulties your child is experiencing and how those difficulties are impacting their ability to perform certain tasks.
Goal Setting. After conducting an extensive assessment, the therapist will help both you and your child decide which of the problems are the most important, most urgent, and most influential in ensuring your child lives a happy life.
Exercise Selection. To meet the selected goals on time, your child's therapist will choose a list of treatment activities that are ideal for developing the skills required to reach those goals.
Regular Reviews. As long as your child's treatment lasts, you will receive regular reviews on their progress. This ensures that you are fully aware of how your child's therapy is going.
A Final Review Before Discharge. The final review will be the one where your therapist believes your child has made the maximum progress through OT effectively.
