It is well known that there are many side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, but did you know that cancer survivors have an increased risk of hearing loss and tinnitus?

Research has revealed that certain chemotherapy medications and radiation therapy can cause ototoxicity.

What Is Ototoxicity?

Ototoxicity refers to drug or chemical damage to the auditory system that occurs after exposure to medications or chemicals that affect the inner ear. Ototoxicity can cause permanent sensorineural hearing loss and persistent tinnitus. Studies have shown that 50% of cancer survivors treated with platinum-containing chemotherapies were found to have significant hearing loss and tinnitus after treatment.

Ototoxicity Statistics:

Β· Ototoxic medications can result in hearing loss, tinnitus, hyperacusis, dizziness, or vertigo

Β· Ototoxicity can occur in all age groups, affecting between 23%-50% of adults and up to 60% of children taking ototoxic medications

Β· Around 10% of people taking aminoglycoside antibiotics experience ototoxicity

A special shoutout goes to our dedicated Events Committee for planning and making this event happen, with special assistance from the warehouse team, who assisted in moving the event indoors due to the severe weather – you were lifesavers! πŸŒ©οΈπŸ‘

Spending too much time around loud noise, without the proper hearing protection can cause hearing loss. But once hearing damage has occurred, you can't get it back.

This is called noise-induced hearing loss, and the most at-risk group is teens and young adults. Many are not aware of the level of noise that can be damaging to hearing.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that roughly 12.5% of those aged 6-19 and 17% of those between the ages of 20 and 69 have suffered permanent damage to their hearing from excessive noise exposure. Read more from the CDC here: https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/hearingloss/noise.html....

Protect your hearing by avoiding extended exposure to loud sounds, turning down the volume of music, and using proper hearing protection when possible.

We love to help out our community and the people around us. Here's the story of Dawn.

A testimonial from one of our patients (the post was approved by the parent) :

Dawn is 8 years old, in 2017 she had her first hearing test and ear tubes placed.

At this point in her life, she wasn't talking much, she was very overwhelmed with sounds and struggled with her balance to simply walk across a room.

She was later that year diagnosed with Autism Level 1.

She had subsequent ear tubes placed over the next several years as her tubes were not staying, then she would have ear infections and pressure. Now she has two large holes in her eardrums about 50% in one and 75% in the other.

She started school when she was 6, and she's done well but is continuing to struggle to spell and read.

On Aug 29th, 2022 we saw an Audiologist in Wellstone ENT, she informed us that Dawn was missing most of the consonance in our language. This made me very sad and explained so much of what Dawn was struggling with. In addition to her academic struggles she often came home very fatigued and just drained after school, listening was very difficult.

We pursued hearing aids with our insurance. Insurance said she didn't meet the criteria for hearing loss threshold and we were denied. I began networking with moms in Facebook groups, and a mom reached out to me and she said she had hearing aids that we could have, as her daughter upgraded to cholclear implants.

So she sent them to Dawn. We took them to the audiologist, got them set up, and had impressions made for ear molds. They said to come back in 2 weeks and we would be set.

About 4 days later, the audiologist calls and informs us that these that were given to us were too strong for Dawn and cannot be adjusted for her. I prayed and called the manufacturer of the hearing aids, the woman there was unable to help with a solution but suggested I call an audiologist that serviced the hearing aids in my area, to see if they could exchange the aids for us.

I was set on a mission and called about 20 within a 1hr drive of my house.

I spoke with Tamara at AnyPlace MD, and she said I can't say for sure, but let me talk with my boss and see if we can't do something for you.

She called me back later that afternoon and said: "I talked with my boss and we would like to help and bless you guys. I heard the desperation in your voice and the Lord impressed me with the need to tell my boss the story and see if we can do something".

The following week Dawn got set up with hearing aids. She is now hearing 100%.

She was very excited when she played her cello for the first time and heard the true sound. We showed her with and without the hearing aids and she went "wow, that's so cool".

Even after that the team has been helping us with technical issues and making sure we have everything we need for Dawn to succeed.

We cannot thank Dr. Balbo and his team enough for changing Dawn's life.

It's officially summer, meaning concerts and recreational events are in full swing!

Take extra precautions this summer to protect your hearing when enjoying concerts, and athletic or entertainment events. The sound levels at these events are usually above safe levels, and with such high intensity, it can easily reach hazardous levels. There is also an increased risk of hearing damage if the sound remains high for a long duration of the event.

Wearing hearing protection, keeping a safe distance from the noise, and taking frequent breaks can help protect you from noise-induced hearing loss. Remember, once your hearing is gone, you can't get it back!

Always remember that putting any object in your ear is dangerous and can potentially damage your eardrum and your hearing. Earwax should be expelled naturally by the human body, but if it is not possible, then a specialist should carefully remove the impacted earwax.

Follow this simple guide for the Dos and Don'ts of safely removing earwax. Call or visit our website to learn more about our earwax removal services

Timeline photos 02/18/2022

Reminder: Earwax, also known as cerumen, is completely natural and even a necessary component in having a healthy ear environment. Earwax is the body's naturally acidic lubricant that prevents bacteria from growing and collects debris that could potentially damage the eardrum.

The body has a natural process for expelling earwax, so there is no need to try removing it. Using Q-tips can actually push earwax further into the ear canal and prevent your body from expelling it naturally. This can lead to impaction and can mean having to see a specialist to have the earwax removed.

If you are experiencing ear pain or trouble hearing and you think it may be related to impacted earwax, call our office today to schedule an appointment.
