To commemorate National Native American Heritage Month, we’d like to share the fascinating background of WES Measurement Specialist Guyrene Ben. Guyrene is full Diné (Navajo) from the Tábaahá (Water Edge clan). She was raised on the Utah/Colorado border of the Navajo Reservation, and her Great Grandmother was part of a band of Navajos who survived the Long Walk, a 250-450 mile route in the mid-1800s. Her Grandfather is a clan descendant of Chief Manuelito, whose band avoided capture.

Before her time in our industry, she was a credentialed delegate to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues focused on the advancement of Women’s Rights for Indigenous Women Worldwide. She helps mentor Indigenous students when she’s not reviewing and evaluating Hydrocarbon measurement data as a part of WES’s Measurement team.

“WES’s emphasis on volunteering is important to me as it is the same fundamental teachings of my Indigenous knowledge. Because of WES works with the Food Bank of the Rockies, the local Denver Indian Center can keep their food pantry stocked for struggling American Indian families in the greater Denver area. It brings my traditional Diné teachings full circle.”

Every workday Michael Ortega drives to a small corner of Texas, miles from any resemblance of a town to oversee daily operations at our Ramsey Plant. Michael is one of WES’s unsung heroes who has spent nearly a decade at the plant helping to deliver energy from the Delaware Basin. Starting in plant maintenance in 2015, WES’s career development opportunities and his hard work enabled him to accept the position of Plant Foreman this year.

Part of our responsibility as a midstream provider is to be prepared for any emergency. Our Crisis and Emergency Management team hosted five, three-day training sessions late this summer with HSSE and other staff to train for their roles in an Incident Command System. It’s just one way that we operate responsibly and why .

It’s awesome when you run across incredibly unique career stories like Measurement Tech Manuel Rosas’ journey. Formerly a correctional officer in South Texas, Manuel learned the basics of the measurement role in the midstream world from a neighbor, who showed him the ropes literally in his own backyard.

Within two years of starting to work at WES during the day, Manuel took classes at a law enforcement academy in Eagle Pass, Texas, at night and graduated as a Valedictorian of his class! He’s now one of our Measurement subject-matter experts developing training materials for his WES colleagues.

We love to put a spotlight on some of the people that make WES great. Today in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re featuring Senior Foreman Dave Acuna.

Dave started his road to Western Midstream with a diesel technology course at Gillette College before coming on as a mechanic, then as an operator at our Hilight Gas Plant. Five years ago, he was promoted as the plant manager and now helps mentor the operations team there.

“A person couldn’t ask for a better team to work with, and I enjoy the new challenges in an ever-changing environment. It’s truly a privilege to work here at WES with these great people in the Powder River Basin.”

Our Colorado State University Department of Mechanical Engineering Professor Daniel Olsen is leading a project to reduce methane emissions from large engines that power natural gas compressors, with a $1.5 million U.S. Department of Energy grant.

With this big yellow Caterpillar engine in place at our Powerhouse Energy Campus, Daniel Olsen, co-investigator Bret Windom, and their team of student researchers are now developing the filtration and recirculation system to reduce methane emissions. For the next step of trials, Western Midstream has offered the use of a production engine at a field site for testing.
