We would like to thank the volunteers from CDC who spent the month of April educating the Mozambican Emergency Medicine residents in the area of toxicology. The residents benefited greatly from their expertise!

This month we are privileged to have 3 fellows from the CDC teaching the Moz EM residents about toxicology!

The future of emergency medicine in Mozambique

We currently have a team of emergency medicine specialists and residents from Loma Linda University working alongside the Mozambican emergency medicine team in Maputo. All involved are benefiting greatly from the experience!

For the past week, southern Mozambique has experienced flooding due to heavy rain. Roads in some areas have been badly damaged, isolating communities.

Today, the Emergency Medicine specialties were asked to help out at the hospital closest to the flooded area as the staff were struggling to manage the influx of patients. The EM specialists and 1 of the resident were able to lend a hand and had the opportunity to teach the staff of the urgencies department at this hospital how to properly triage patients.

Wednesday is didactic day for the emergency medicine residents!Today was an especially great - clinical practice taught by one of Mozambique’s first ever emergency medicine specialists!

In 2019, one of our Emergency Medicine residents who is now a specialist, began adapting a WHO Patient record that guides the physician to start early emergency medical care. After 4 years, that document will finally go into use tomorrow at Maputo Central Hospital, the largest hospital in Mozambique!!!

Congratulations to Dr. Dino Lopes, a member of the fist class of emergency medicine specialists in Mozambique, on being named the Director of Adult Urgencies Services at the Central Hospital of Maputo! A huge advance for emergency medicine in Mozambique!

Onésia, a first year emergency medicine resident in Mozambique, recently assisted an elderly patient who had waited for 3 days in a different hospital to have her dislocated jaw fixed. Onésia and the EM team were able to assist her within 10 minutes - easing days of suffering.
