Scalp buildup can occur due to a variety of reasons, including:

1. Excess Sebum Production: The sebaceous glands on the scalp produce sebum, an oily substance that can accumulate if produced in excess.
2. Product Residue: Hair care products such as shampoos, conditioners, gels, and sprays can leave residues on the scalp, leading to buildup over time.
3. Dead Skin Cells: The scalp naturally sheds skin cells, and if these are not adequately removed, they can accumulate and form buildup.
4. Sweat and Pollution: Sweat, combined with environmental pollutants, can contribute to scalp buildup.
5. Improper Washing: Infrequent or inadequate washing of the scalp and hair can lead to the accumulation of oils, dead skin cells, and product residues.
6. Fungal Infections: Conditions like dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, often caused by yeast (Malassezia), can result in flakes and buildup on the scalp.
7. Hard Water: The minerals in hard water can react with hair products, creating deposits on the scalp.
8. Poor Diet: A diet high in sugar and unhealthy fats can increase sebum production, contributing to buildup.
