As most of you may have seen there has been a recall on cantaloupes grown in Mexico. This is why l always encourage those who tour our farm to 1) wash your produce 3) if at all possible buy from American farmers. Food borne illnesses are no joke and should be taken very seriously.

We had another great group come in for tour, 8th grade students from Tift County and Tiftarea, who are apart of the young leaders group supported by our local chamber. They listened and asked great questions! The future of our community looks bright!

Did you know that strawberries we eat are hybrids of wild Chilean strawberries. A French spy took them back to where the French cultivators crossed the Virginia strawberry with the Chilian strawberry, and the magic happened. The resulting strawberry tasted great, had a substantial size, and was more hardy. This strawberry remained in favor until 1909 when E.C. Howard of Massachusetts discovered a variety he called “Howard 17.” Todays strawberries have hybrids that help with everything from diseases to texture ! But did you know that the first strawberries picked are the sweetest. Despite the name, strawberries are not technically berries or fruit, but rather the ends of the plant's stamen. The fruits of strawberry plants are actually the small black spots on the "berry." A strawberry flower averages five to seven petals, while a typical strawberry has 150 to 200 seeds on its surface. The seeds can grow to make new plants, but most strawberry plants today instead are reproduced by runners. Every acre of strawberries can produce about 50,000 pounds depending on the variety and is harvested by hand every three days or so depending on the weather!

Cabbage is from the family Cruciferae. The family name comes from the Latin word meaning cross, because the flowers are cross-shaped. Evidence shows cabbages have been cultivated for over 4,000 years. Brussels sprouts, which are in the cabbage family, are the youngest with records dating back only 500 years. The Celts brought cabbage to Europe from Asia around 600 BC. Cabbage is available in many varieties: red or purple, green and Napa cabbage, usually found in Chinese cooking. Cabbage is low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
Cabbage is high in dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, potassium, manganese, vitamin A, thiamin, vitamin B6, calcium and iron. So eat up and take advantage of Georgia Grown cabbage!

Summer is coming and squash is in full swing! Which means lots of hours harvesting and packing produce. So be sure when you are at the grocery store look for those products or American grown. There are thousands of pounds of blueberries, cucumbers squash and many other things being dumped into the US hurting American Farmers, so be sure and do your part when you can or request your favorite stores do so too!

Who is your Ag Hero and why?

"Bill Brim and Jessica Brim Kirk. (Lewis Taylor Farms) Not only is Lewis Taylor Farms a large diversified vegetable growing and packing operation in south Georgia, but when the pandemic hit in 2020 they thought outside of the box by putting things in the box. Jessica had previous experience with marketing produce boxes and saw an opportunity to work with the Georgia Grown program and USDA programs to fill boxes of different produce items to sale to people concerned about access to fresh vegetables and fruit. They not only sourced products from their farm but from other growers in south Georgia."
