Announcement: Dental Site Closures

All Virginia Garcia dental sites will be closed on Tuesday, August 27th, from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM for an All-staff meeting. Thank you for your understanding.

Jared Reynoso Sandoval joined Virginia Garcia as an intern with the Mobile Operations Program in 2022, while completing his hours to become a Certified Medical Assistant. He was then hired as a full-time CMA for our Covid Response Team in January of 2023. A year ago, Jared moved into the role of Office Health Assistant for our School-Based Health Centers, where his duties range from working with providers and drawing labs to administering vaccines to registered students ranging in age from 2 to 21.

Jared’s not done learning and growing at Virginia Garcia though! He is currently deciding between becoming either an RN (Registered Nurse) or a PA (Physician Associate, formerly Assistant.)

Born in Portland but raised in a small city in Mexico called Villa de Alvarez, Colima, Jared returned to Portland in search of educational opportunities when he was 18. A self-described empathic person who has always wanted to help others, Virginia Garcia’s mission to provide healthcare for those facing barriers very much resonates with Jared’s personal values. He especially enjoys the amazing relationships that he has established with both his patients and his coworkers.

In his free time, enjoys both playing and coaching soccer as well as spending time with his loved ones. He is also deeply appreciative of his family’s support saying, “I owe everything to my parents and especially my mother. I truly believe my parents helped me become the person I am today.”

Daisy Sanchez, one of our Farmworker Outreach Program (FOP) volunteers, is a 4th-year student at the University of Oregon majoring in Human Physiology and Spanish and minoring in Global Health and Chemistry. As if all of that is not enough, Daisy plans to get some work experience, possibly obtain her certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA), and then ultimately become a Physician's Associate (PA.)

Volunteering at FOP was a natural fit for Daisy, who grew up helping her father, a farmworker, out in the fields. Originally from Michoacan, Mexico, many of her family members came to Cornelius in the 80's. Daisy once coincidentally met an Uncle while volunteering at a farm several years ago, showing just how extensive her Cornelius family is!

Daisy's Mom has also been a Virginia Garcia patient and always taught Daisy that Virginia Garcia is more than just a healthcare clinic....it is a community hub. Daisy experienced this sense of community herself while volunteering at FOP. She especially enjoyed "helping out, educating patients, and connecting with people from all backgrounds."

Virginia Garcia is so appreciative of Daisy and all of the volunteers who join us in serving our community. Our 2024 Farmworker Outreach Program is coming to a close this week, but our Mobile Outreach Program will continue to visit underserved areas throughout the year.

Volunteer Kaspar Czuk studied the Spanish language throughout his middle, high school, and college years and couldn't wait to put those bilingual skills to use this summer with fellow Spanish speakers at Virginia Garcia's Farmworker Outreach Program (FOP.)

When asked about his experience while volunteering at FOP, he noted that "everyone is super nice and helping out in an equal manner." Kaspar especially enjoyed the FOP events where he had the chance to connect with kids of all ages by supervising some of the children's activities. In turn, they entertained (and educated) him. He loved that the kids were "sweet and goofy" and taught him all about the newest TikTok trends.

When not volunteering, Kaspar enjoys playing the guitar and banjo as well as singing. This summer, he was excited to discover a fun rope swing by the Willamette River. Soon, he will return to St. Olaf College in Minnesota to continue his work towards a degree in Music for Social Impact and Pre-Health. Kaspar is considering a future dental career.

We thank Kaspar and all of our volunteers for helping us so much this Summer!

This is Lauren Yeiser's first time volunteering with Virginia Garcia's Farmworker Outreach Program (FOP), and they are already planning to return next summer! Previously working in the tech sector, Lauren is in the midst of a career change and felt that volunteering with our FOP might help in discerning if healthcare should be their next step.

Lauren was drawn to Virginia Garcia because of their desire to provide hands-on/real-life help to underserved communities. Lauren had a special interest in learning more about where the food on our table comes from...and the people who do the hard work of harvesting that food. An added bonus was the chance to utilize their Spanish bilingual skills while connecting with patients at the FOP events.

Leaning towards becoming an NP (Nurse Practitioner), Lauren is currently working on completing their prerequisite coursework. Just as a farmer plants a seed that grows into the foods we eat, we hope that volunteering with Virginia Garcia this summer has served as the "seed" that helps Lauren grow into a future healthcare professional!

The 2024 Farmworker Outreach Program (FOP) began in mid-June and has already served hundreds of patients. It truly takes a village to make this amazing mobile outreach program happen each year, and our volunteers are an important part of that village.

This is Namrata Venkatesan’s first experience volunteering with our FOP. A current undergraduate UCLA student studying Cognitive Science, Namrata was drawn to Virginia Garcia as both a place to utilize her Spanish bilingual skills as well as an opportunity to interact with patients and confirm her desire to eventually pursue an MD.

“I’m grateful to be working with clinics like Virginia Garcia that ultimately helped me solidify my interest in the field. I also hope to supplement my career by actively participating in healthcare advocacy and bringing essential medical care to underserved populations wherever I end up practicing.”

Namrata has been especially inspired by the positivity and resiliency of the patients she has met at the FOP events.

Before returning to Los Angeles for her sophomore year, Namrata is enjoying hiking on Portland’s many trails and taking advantage of her summer break to enjoy another passion…music. Thank you to Namrata and all of the volunteers who share their time and talents with us!

Alondra Espitia is a great example of how Virginia Garcia’s Workforce Development program and tuition assistance benefits help us in growing and retaining our valued employees. The middle child of four whose parents immigrated from Zacatecas, Mexico, Alondra was born and raised in the Aloha/Beaverton area. “[My parents’] sacrifices allowed me to be a first-generation college student and [Virginia Garcia’s] tuition assistance allowed me to work and attend school at the same time.”

At 16, Alondra began working part time at a retirement home and came to the realization that helping others gave her a sense of purpose. At 18, she began working at Virginia Garcia’s call center. When she learned about the Dental Assisting program being offered, she joined its first cohort.

Alondra worked her way up from receptionist to Sterile Technician to DA I and now her current position of DA II at VG’s Beaverton at The Round location. Additionally, she serves as a part-time instructor for the very same PCC program that she attended.

Although she is considering future specialization in either Radiology or Hygiene, Alondra is currently enjoying creating a safe and calm environment for patients who fear going to the dentist--so that the fear is changed to a positive view for the rest of their lives.

As part of the Oregon Youth Challenge High School program, Alondra mentors a high school student in Bend—providing encouragement (and a great real-life example) of why it is important to remain in school.

In her spare time, Alondra has fun with her 6 nephews (and soon-to-be first niece!), brunching (and bowling) with friends, and making bouquets out of Legos.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth—a powerful reminder of freedom and the ongoing fight for equity.

We’re also reflecting on the insightful conversations from our recent Juneteenth event, where we watched "The Black Starts"—a coming-of-age story of eight young Black men from Portland, OR, who travel to Ghana for a two-week leadership expedition led by the non-profit Word is Bond, reconnecting with their ancestral roots for the very first time.

At Virginia Garcia, we are committed to providing equitable healthcare and support for all. We are dedicated to ongoing discussions on how to better serve Black communities and all those seeking healthcare. Let’s honor this day by continuing to uplift and empower our community. Together, we can create a healthier, more just future.
