Here is just a short list of a long list of Hoodoo terminology. In Hoodoo there are Hoodoo terms used to describe plants, people, and actions. Much of these words are apart of everyday African American Vernacular. Here is an example of how cultural Hoodoo is.
Trick- another way to describe a spiritual ritual or action to manipulate or influence circumstances or a person.
Root – another word to describe a spiritual ritual or action to manipulate or influence circumstances or a person.
Work- an action to to describe a spiritual ritual or action to manipulate or influence circumstances or a person.
Four-eyed- someone who is a seer or has '"spiritual eyes." The ability to see both in the spiritual realm and physical realm .
Two-headed- A person who does malevolent and benevolent works. Also, a multifaceted spiritual worker.
Cross or cross up- another word for hex, jinx, or curse.
Mojo- luck or attraction talisman bag or a description of a spiritual force.
Gri- gri or gris-gris- protection amulet bag.
Swamper- A person who does works and collects supplies from the swamp areas.
Walk em down- to tire out a person or a situation to dominate.
Hands- charms or something put together to assist or give a helping hand in one's life.
Cauls- a type of veil that makes you able to see ghosts, a portion or the amniotic sac that covers the face during birth.
Rootwork- manipulating energy through animism plus spiritual and medicinal herbalism.
Juju- possessed with a type of spirit or magical power and/or spiritual power or magic within itself.
Root doctors - people who work with herbal healing and spatiality with God.
Sin sick soul- internal spiritual healing needed within a person.
Wongah- charm bag (Louisianan term).
Wangateur-a Mississippi Valley word uses to describe a practioner whose specialty is to create talismans or amulets. This word most likely comes from the word Wong which is derivative of the Ga-Dangbe tribe of Ghana and Togo.
Toby- charm or spirit bag.
Gombre work- conjuration or spiritual work.
Grains of paradise- seeds from the melegueta pepper plant, native to West Africa. The pod the seed comes from is also known as alligator pepper or guinea pepper.
King of the woods- a plant also known as Spikenard, three leaves at the end representing the son, father, and holy ghost. The tea is used to cure most conditions and an added ingredient in jack balls.
Devil's s***f- is a dried puffball mushroom that is powdered. Created into a poison to cross or curse.
Angels turnip root- this root is typically carried in red flannel for good luck. The leaves are called peace plant. The leaves turn red and up creating a ccross.
Cooter- from the Bambara word "kuta meaning turtle. Also described to be a woman’s va**na which is also called a snappah , another name for turtle.
Goofer- meaning to die or death from the kikongo word kufaw. Goofer dust typical primary ingredient is graveyard dirt.
