It’s National Trivia day, so we’re going to share a little known fact about sports mouth guards.

The exact origin of mouth guards is unclear, but most attribute their beginning to boxing. Boxers used to clench cotton, tape, sponge, or small pieces of wood between their teeth during fights, but had a hard time focusing on the fight and clenching their teeth at the same time.

A British dentist named Woolf Krause began fashioning mouthpieces for boxers in 1892 using strips of natural rubber resin over boxers’ teeth before they entered the ring.
