What’s the difference between Lactose Intolerance & Dairy Allergy?
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they actually involve two completely different body systems and it’s so helpful to understand the difference when troubleshooting our own health issues.
Like all food allergies, dairy allergies primarily pertain to the immune system while lactose intolerance involves the digestive system.
When people with a dairy allergy ingest milk or milk products, their immune system reacts to two key proteins found in milk:
* Casein
* Whey
This causes the immune system to flood the body with histamines and create an inflammatory immune response.
A dairy sensitivity is an immune response (not mediated by IgE antibodies) that can have a more gradual onset and include systemic symptoms such as:
* Stomach cramps & diarrhea
* Skin issues (acne, rashes)
* Overall inflammation (pain, swelling)
* Migraines
* Respiratory issues
Lactose intolerance occurs when an individual lacks sufficient reserves of lactase, an enzyme responsible for processing lactose - a sugar in milk.
When lactase enzyme production falls short, lactose advances to the colon without being broken down. This causes bacteria to feed on unprocessed lactose, resulting in digestive symptoms.
Generally, lactose intolerance presents more immediately and causes mainly GI discomfort:
* Gas
* Bloating
* Diarrhea
* Cramping

I want to share these words from a recent 1:1 client so you can feel into what’s possible. I encounter so many people who are feeling stuck, frustrated, and confused about the best next steps to take to get rid of symptoms and bring their body back into balance.
This is often because we’re lacking the tools we need to get to the roots of what’s going on and truly heal. OR we have dozens of tools in front of us but we’re confused about what’s going to work for our unique bodies.
I want to share this story with you so you can see the ways that this is possible for you too! Like one of my mentors says when it comes to health issues, “there is no knot that can’t be untied.” And being in the healing arts over the last 13+ years I know this to be true.

My blood sugar balancing Matcha Latte Recipe 🍵
This is my most requested recipe! It’s so good and the addition of some protein and good fats help to balance the blood sugar beautifully so we can avoid getting on that roller coaster. Enjoy!
INGREDIENTS
* 1 scoop matcha powder (I love )
* 2 scoops collagen powder ( right now but changes often)
* Splash of coconut milk OR 1 tbsp coconut butter OR coconut creamer
* Dash of cinnamon
* 8oz hot water
DIRECTIONS
1. Place all ingredients into a blender except water.
2. Allow the boiled water to cool slightly and pour into the mixture to avoid burning the matcha.
3. Blend until frothy and combined (about 30 seconds)
4. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!

In a world where we can force, muscle, conform, demand and push the body, more and more I choose to lean into the practice of tending.
Tending is providing care for something or someone. It is the art and practice of gently giving the body what it needs.
Tending to small, daily signals from the body allows us to intervene before they get louder and tip into imbalance or dis-ease.
Tending is a practice that allows us to come into deeper relationship with the body and simply and lovingly give it what it is asking for. No stress, no strain, no forcing or dragging the body along. Just tending. When we begin to do this our body responds back! Our foundations get stronger, and we begin to trust ourselves again.
Some great questions to start for a tending practice are:
🤍Do you get up and get yourself a glass of water when you feel thirsty or do you ignore the sensation?
🤍 Do you go p*e when you feel the urge or do you ignore the urge and sensation?
🤍 When you’re tired, do you give yourself a small break to pause and rest?
🤍 How often do you find yourself powering through and ignoring the signs your body is giving you?

I was speaking to a woman the other day who told me she had been feeling “off” for a long time now experiencing symptoms of fatigue, increased weight gain, digestive issues, brain fog and joint pain.
She’d been to a few doctors who ran tests and told her that everything appeared to be “normal.” She felt discouraged, knowing that she didn’t feel right but she didn’t feel validated about how she was feeling.
She was confused because she didn’t have any formal diagnosis of disease from her practitioners and, therefore, wasn’t given any guidance on what to do to help herself feel better.
She asked me, “How can I heal if I don’t have a diagnosis?”
An AARDA study found that the average time for diagnosis of an autoimmune disease is 4.6 years. During that period, the patient typically has seen 4.8 doctors in our current medical system.
Our medical system is really a disease-focused system where the goal is to identify and diagnose a disease state. When our symptoms don’t fit into a neat and tidy disease category, patients aren’t given a diagnosis and are sometimes told to come back when things get worse and they meet criteria for treatment.
This, to me, just isn’t good enough and allows many people to fall through the cracks without getting proper medical care.
Having a diagnosis can be really helpful and definitely worth pursuing because it allows us to get the right medications, insurance reimbursement, and have a clear plan of action and path to healing.
But, a diagnosis is not everything and waiting for a formal diagnosis to do anything about our health can stop us from what’s available to us right now.
So what happens when we don’t fit into this disease category, but we still don’t feel great?
It may seem as though there is nothing we can do, but actually there are many tools in the toolkit to support the body at this pivotal time!
This is the area that I LOVE to work in, and the area that gets missed so often.

In our current medical model much of the care is aimed at identifying disease. Once the disease is identified, it's viewed as a "success" and is often time where the discovery process stops.
For example, if you see a Gastroenterologist for bloating and digestive issues and they do a colonoscopy and run labs and find you don't have anything that fits into a disease category they diagnose you with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) so you have something and that's that.
You are then given some pharmaceuticals to manage the symptoms, possibly minor dietary recommendations and told "You have IBS, so you'll have to manage that for the rest of your life." The discovery process to understand WHY you have that and what's going on at the roots doesn't occur. It stops right there.

This happened in my own healing journey as well when I was given a diagnosis and told "this is what you have, I'm really sorry" and there was never any follow up to help me understand WHY and WHAT I could do. That was a journey I had to go on on my own, and I found wonderful practitioners and support along the way.
That's why I approach my work and my own life with a Functional or root cause lens, meaning that the identification of symptoms or a disease is only the FIRST step in the journey rather than the last! There are so many more tools in the toolkit.

I've been very into growing my own sprouts lately (mostly because I wish I had a garden but there are too many animals that eat everything in Topanga so I'm holding off and need an outlet to grow things haha) 🐇 but also because they are sneaky little powerhouses of nutrition!
Broccoli sprouts contain high amounts of sulforaphane. When you chew the broccoli sprouts you activate the enzyme (myrosinase) that converts a compound in the broccoli sprouts into sulforaphane. The sulforaphane has been shown to reduce inflammation and fight free radicals among other amazing benefits.
AMAZING and so beautiful how little seeds can give us so much. Nature is a miracle and I'm blown away every single day.

Over the last several years working in the realm of holistic health I've come to see a phenomenon I like to call "Wellness Burnout."
It can feel SO empowering when we realize we have the power to use nutrition and lifestyle shifts to improve how we feel. We might start out by experimenting with diet, then start taking new supplements, then incorporating dry brushing, taking saunas, meditating, doing yoga, oil pulling, tongue scraping, trampolining, acupuncture, breathwork, fasting, cleansing, blue light blocking, grounding, seed cycling, and ALL the things!
I speak with clients at this place of burnout who say, "Christina, I'm literally doing everything right and I'm STILL not feeling better. What gives?"
At the end of the day we all just want to feel BETTER. And most of us are willing to do whatever it takes! If you get to the place where your wellness routines have begun to feel like a chore, you're feeling stressed and overwhelmed, and you're trying to get through tasks so you can mentally check off a box that you "did it" but are feeling stressed the whole time, you might experiencing some Wellness Burnout.
While we can certainly use many of these amazing health supportive practices (I use many of the ones I listed frequently!), we don't have to do ALL of the things ALL the time.
In fact, we aren't meant to.
Taking the time to tune into the practices that feel good and supportive to you specifically at this moment in time, and working to bring more depth and presence to those (rather than adding on more interventions) allows us to reap the benefits more fully and take some pressure off of ourselves to do it all.
