City of Topeka releases 2024 ‘Point in Time Homeless Count’ numbers

Topeka and Shawnee County’s homeless population has increased by 125 people since 2023, according to numbers released Friday from the City of Topeka’s annual Point in Time Homeless
Count.

The count took place on January 25, 2024. The one-day event provides a snapshot of the individuals in the community who are experiencing homelessness, as defined by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). More than 40 people helped with this year’s count. The Topeka and Shawnee County Continuum of Care (CoC) held off on releasing their annual Point in Time data in order to collaborate with other CoC’s across the state. Statewide collaboration will not only
give them better data, but allows for more funding opportunities. However, given the recent inquires, the Topeka/ Shawnee County CoC is releasing their local data ahead of the statewide release.

Wow! What a turnout at EasterFest! We are thankful to all of the volunteers who spent hours stuffing thousands of plastic eggs with candy. Board members Amy Hinrich, Kevin Doel, Myles Louderback, and Tiffany Brubaker all spent their day representing Let’s Help and making sure the egg hunts were fun and all those kids had a blessed time. Get ready to embrace the holiday spirit as we announce the return of our cherished tradition! This year, we're thrilled to elevate the experience with an exciting partnership with Aetna Better Health of Kansas. 🤝

SENT Topeka has teamed up with Aetna Better Health of Kansas, and this collaboration adds a new level of excitement to our beloved event. Aetna has generously provided a $3,000 grant to support this event. However, this partnership goes beyond capturing holiday moments with Santa; it offers families the opportunity to access essential healthcare services. An Aetna representative will be on-site to assist families in signing up for Medicaid insurance and provide valuable insights into their medical benefits. Additionally, a Healthy Kansas Kids Community Outreach Representative will be available to answer questions and assist with filling out the Families with Children KanCare application. 💼💡

📅 Event Details:
📆 Date: December 9, 2023
⌚ Time: 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
📍 Location: 455 SE Golf Park Blvd.

🎁✨ But there's even more to look forward to! Thanks to Aetna Better Health of Kansas, we're introducing something brand new: the FREE Christmas Shop. Kids attending the event can choose special gifts for their caregivers and even join in the fun of wrapping them, creating truly magical holiday moments.

At SENT Topeka, our "Pictures with Santa" event isn't just about photographs; it's about community, joy, and the spirit of giving. Let's make this holiday season unforgettable together! 🎅❤️
