Outages from the severe storms overnight peaked at about 28,000 customers without power throughout our service area, with Topeka, Wichita, Newton and Leavenworth heavily impacted. As of 8 a.m., we’ve restored power for 65% of customers impacted. About 9,500 customers are without power and we have about 600 outage events.

Evergy crews from surrounding communities have come to these areas to assist with power restoration. Initial damage reports include broken poles, downed wires and trees in power lines. Once damage assessment teams have been in the field, we will be able to provide an estimate for getting power back on. While line crews are restoring power, other teams are canvassing storm struck areas to assess damage, which makes power restoration more efficient. These teams help ensure vegetation and line crews arrive equipped with what’s needed for local repairs.

If you see a downed line, stay at least 30 feet away from it and assume that any downed line is still energized. Report it right away online at http://www.evergy.com/powerlinesafety. Call 911 in an emergency.

Evergy prioritizes outages to first restore service to public safety facilities and then based on restoring power to the most customers, which means repairing main lines and then focusing work based on the number of customers affected by individual outages.
