"The most rewarding aspect of being a pediatrician is being able to see kids grow ... On World Su***de Prevention Day, Torrance Memorial stands together in raising awareness and offering support to those in need. Su***de is a devastating reality, but by recognizing the warning signs and knowing where to turn for help, we can make a difference.
Recognizing the Warning Signs:
💙 Withdrawal and depression
💙 Loss of interest in hobbies or schoolwork
💙 Talk of hopelessness or self-harm
💙 Giving away prized possessions
Where to Turn for Help:
If you recognize these signs in a loved one, ask them, "How would you feel most comfortable getting help?" School counselors, therapists, and physicians can offer nonjudgmental spaces to discuss their struggles and connect them to community resources.
Remember, help is always available. The national hotline, 988, provides free, confidential emotional support 24/7 in both English and Spanish. Crisis counselors can assess su***de risk, provide de-escalation, and connect individuals to local resources.
At Torrance Memorial’s Thelma McMillen Recovery Center, we are here to support those facing challenges with mental health and substance abuse. To learn more, visit us and discover the resources available for you and your loved ones.

Together, we can prevent su***de and offer hope. You are not alone. ***dePreventionDay

About 47% of all home fires are caused by cooking. Keep you and your family safe from burn injury by following these tips.
• The best time to cook is when you are wide awake, and not drowsy from medications or alcohol.
• Always wipe clean the stove, oven, exhaust fan to prevent grease buildup.
• Wear short or close-fitting sleeves when cooking.
• Keep a pan lid and dry potholders or oven mitts near you EVERY time you cook.
• Turn pot or pan handles toward the back of the stove.
• When heating food in the microwave, use microwave safe cookware that allows steam to escape.
• Allow food to rest before removing from the microwave.
• When frying, use a pan lid or splash guard to prevent grease splatter.
• Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave, turn off the stove.
• If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly. Remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you to check on your cooking.
• After cooking, check the kitchen to make sure all burners and other appliances are turned off.

🚨 WARNING 🚨 Fentanyl is a deadly synthetic opioid that is turning up in counterfeit pills made to look like Xanax, Oxycodone, and even ADHD meds. Just one pill can cause an overdose because even a tiny amount of fentanyl can be lethal.
Stay safe – only take medications prescribed by a healthcare provider and filled at a licensed pharmacy. Don't risk it. If you or someone you know needs Narcan (a life-saving medication that can reverse an opioid overdose), it’s available for FREE at Torrance Memorial’s Emergency Department. No questions asked.
International Overdose Awareness Day
Stay hydrated as we close out Summer in the South Bay. Did you know a healthy adult male needs about 3 liters of water per day, and a female needs 2.16 liters? 💧
Here are some tips to keep you hydrated and healthy:
1️⃣ Hydrate Around the Clock – Don’t wait until you're thirsty! Drink water regularly to stay hydrated.
2️⃣ Prioritize Water – Water should be your go-to. Sports drinks are often only needed for high-intensity activities.
3️⃣ Limit Sun Exposure – Stay cool by exercising in the morning or evening, and always take water breaks.
4️⃣ Avoid Diuretics – Drinks like coffee, tea, and alcohol can dehydrate you. Enjoy them in moderation and drink extra water.

🔥 Labor Day Weekend Cooking Safety🔥
Did you know cooking is the leading cause of home fires?
🏠 Keep your kitchen safe by following these simple tips:
Always keep your cooking area clean and ensure your exhaust fan is free of grease build-up.
Turn pot or pan handles toward the back of the stove to avoid accidental spills.
Never leave your stove or grill unattended while cooking! A moment away could lead to a disaster.
If a fire starts, cover the pan with a lid, turn off the heat, and never use water to extinguish it. If you can't cover it, smother the fire with baking soda or salt.
Stay safe and enjoy your holiday!

Refreshing Non-Alcoholic Ginger Mojito Mocktail
Since alcohol can decrease our hydration status, why not try this mocktail recipe instead? By removing the alcohol, this drink becomes a great refreshing party drink to enjoy out in the sun.
• 1-inch piece ginger, grated
• 1-inch piece cucumber, grated
• juice of ½ lime
• 6 mint leaves
• ½ cup diet ginger beer
• ½ cup sparkling water
Muddle ginger, cucumber and lime in a bowl. Strain the mixture into your glass using a small strainer. Press on the mixture with your fingers or the back of a spoon to ensure all the juice is extracted from the ginger, cucumber and lime. Clap the mint leaves together in your hands 3-4 times to release the oils and scent, then add them to your glass. Add ice and top with ginger beer and sparkling water. Stir gently. Garnish with your choice of lime wheels, ginger, cucumber or mint, and serve.
