Utah researchers are testing a birth control for men 03/02/2022

Our colleagues at the University of Utah have now joined the NES/T Gel Male Contraceptive Trial and have begun enrolling couples to try male birth control.

“This is a fabulous opportunity for men to step up and take an active role in the development of new methods of contraception,” he said. “By doing this, they can demonstrate to their partners that they’re invested in a better future for all of us.”

Dr. Christina Wang is Professor of Medicine, Assistant Dean at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Associate Director for Clinical and Translational Science Institute. She is also a faculty member of the Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute, Torrance, California.

She obtained her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), and Doctorate of Medicine (MD) degrees from the University of Hong Kong. Postgraduate training in Medicine and Endocrinology in Hong Kong and Australia followed. In 1989, Dr. Wang moved to the United States and accepted a position as Director of Andrology Services at the Division of Endocrinology/Metabolism and the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles. At the same time, she became a Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Wang joined the faculty at Harbor-UCLA and L.A. BioMed in 1993 as part of the Division of Endocrinology and Program Director of the then General Clinical Research Center (replaced today by the UCLA-Clinical and Translational Science Institute).

Dr. Wang is a renowned andrologist/endocrinologist and a world leader in efforts to develop safe, effective, and reversible male contraceptives. Her current clinical research studies include androgen replacement therapy, hormonal male contraceptive development, late onset hypogonadism, accurate assessment of serum androgens, and diet and androgen metabolism. Her basic research studies focus on the regulation of spermatogenesis and mitochondrial derived peptides in spermatogenesis. Dr. Wang takes great pride in being a mentor to many physicians and scientists and is a vocal advocate for young investigators.

Dr. Wang has been an invited speaker and distinguished lecturer at many national and international endocrinology, reproductive endocrinology, and andrology conferences. She has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, 67 chapters, and reviews mainly on male reproductive biology including characterization of the pharmacokinetics and efficacy of androgens in men, trials of hormonal male contraceptive, regulation of germ cell apoptosis, and reproductive aging. Dr. Wang served on the Executive Council, several committees, and was the President of the American Society of Andrology (2006-2007). She also served as Secretary (2001 to 2005), chair of the Program Organizing Committee (2005 to 2009), and then President (2009-2013) of the International Society of Andrology. She has been a member of the Research Group on Methods for the Regulation of Male Fertility of the World Health Organization since 1984, serving as its Chairperson from 1991-2002.
