Today we celebrate DJ on his 4th birthday 🥳 and bring awareness to his epilepsy diagnosis for Epilepsy Awareness Month 💜 DJ’s mom @emteshh shared some words with us about epilepsy, their family life and DJ’s resilient nature: “The journey of raising a child is filled with unexpected challenges and profound joys. When our son DJ was diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation of the GNAO1 gene our family’s life was irrevocably altered. DJ’s journey began with seizures at just 6 days old. This rare gene mutation has led to epilepsy, developmental delays, and abnormal movements. Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by the tendency to have seizures. DJ’s seizures disrupt not only his motor functions but affects each of us in profound ways. We’ve become vigilant, always on the lookout for signs of an impending seizure. This hypervigilance can be exhausting, creating a chronic state of anxiety that affects our work, our relationships, and our mental health. We advocate tirelessly for our son, ensuring he receives the care he needs and deserves. Though non-speaking and non-ambulatory, DJ’s love for watching “Blues Clues” and dining out at restaurants shines through. He utilizes his eye gaze speech generating device to request his favorite foods, restaurants, and Blues Clues episodes! His resilience makes him an inspiring example of embracing life’s joys despite its obstacles. Despite his challenges DJ has shown significant growth utilizing his eye gaze speech generating device to communicate with his family, peers, and teachers. Despite the hardships, epilepsy has brought unexpected gifts. It has taught us to find joy in the small moments, and to celebrate the victories that might seem minor to others but are monumental for us. At times when we are feeling overwhelmed, DJ will make us smile utilizing his AAC device by requesting to go to Starbucks! He knows when we need a break! She can now play alongside her sister Juniper, eat meals at the table with her family, and so much more! All fully supported in her new chair.  Her mom Melanie says, “Picked up the tiniest wheelchair yesterday. It’s not pink like we ordered 5 months ago. It made me so emotional that we waited so long and it’s not even the color we chose but I realize it’s not a huge deal. She likes it and it can go from high to low so that she can be closer to the floor to interact with Juniper. Also the seat comes out and can be placed into a different base that’s more like a stroller. R82 ◽️ ”We have to get in the line!!!” Three amazing things from yesterday 1. There was a Spina Bifida group and Bridge 2 Sports both at the park for an event so Eleanor got to see a bunch of other wheelchair users and walker users at the park with her! 2. Since the last time we were here she has learned to steer her walker and go up and down ramps in her walker - all pivotal to her navigating the play structure! 3. Eleanor has become confident to pull herself onto the slide! We worked on that pulling in OT for at least 6 months! ❤️❤️❤️ The difference in Seeing Eleanor at most parks and playgrounds versus seeing Eleanor at this inclusive playground is like night and day. It’s so incredible to see her get to use the playground alongside other peers.

Adaya is a miracle and continues to make amazing progress two years after falling gravely ill from "awake" Malignant Hypothermia and spending two months in the ICU. Karen Foster, her incredible physical therapist, incorporates the R82 Mustang gait trainer into all of Adaya's physical activities. Stay tuned as we upload the video of her ballet recital!
Convaid Trekker with Snuggle Upholstery: Elizabeth’s Story
Elizabeth lives with her family on her own farm complete with horses, chickens, dogs and cats. She has Spastic Diplegia CP, a neurological condition affecting the stiffness of her muscles and exaggerating some reflexes in her legs, but that does stop her from showing us all of her favorite animals at home. Elizabeth’s mother, whom is also a Physical Therapist, appreciates the Trekker’s durability and large tires to create a smooth ride for Elizabeth while strolling over the farm’s landscape. Watch this video to see how the Trekker with Snuggle upholstery gives Elizabeth the support she needs, while allowing her to fully engage with her life on the farm.
And he’s swimming!! Our kiddos with #specialneeds participate in daily therapy sessions. Here, #ConvaidR82Kids Ambassador Luke has weekly aquatic therapy sessions with Ailene Tisser, owner of Swim Angelfish. Ailene makes therapy fun for the kiddos and as you can see Luke loves it. Way to go, Luke!
