Today on this rare occurrence of a Leap Year, we recognize Rare Disease Day🩷🩵💚💜 A rare disease is classified as a disease that affects only 1 in 2000 people, with 70% of rare diseases beginning in childhood. Worldly, it is estimated that 300 million people are affected by a rare disease. Misdiagnosis, lack of information and quality of care are continual struggles facing the rare disease community. Many in our family of Convaid users have to navigate the confusing world of a rare disease and the strength you have does not go unnoticed. Awareness & support is necessary 🙌🏼

Today we celebrate DJ on his 4th birthday 🥳 and bring awareness to his epilepsy diagnosis for Epilepsy Awareness Month 💜 DJ’s mom shared some words with us about epilepsy, their family life and DJ’s resilient nature:

“The journey of raising a child is filled with unexpected challenges and profound joys. When our son DJ was diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation of the GNAO1 gene our family’s life was irrevocably altered. DJ’s journey began with seizures at just 6 days old. This rare gene mutation has led to epilepsy, developmental delays, and abnormal movements. Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by the tendency to have seizures. DJ’s seizures disrupt not only his motor functions but affects each of us in profound ways. We’ve become vigilant, always on the lookout for signs of an impending seizure. This hypervigilance can be exhausting, creating a chronic state of anxiety that affects our work, our relationships, and our mental health. We advocate tirelessly for our son, ensuring he receives the care he needs and deserves.

Though non-speaking and non-ambulatory, DJ’s love for watching “Blues Clues” and dining out at restaurants shines through. He utilizes his eye gaze speech generating device to request his favorite foods, restaurants, and Blues Clues episodes! His resilience makes him an inspiring example of embracing life’s joys despite its obstacles. Despite his challenges DJ has shown significant growth utilizing his eye gaze speech generating device to communicate with his family, peers, and teachers.

Despite the hardships, epilepsy has brought unexpected gifts. It has taught us to find joy in the small moments, and to celebrate the victories that might seem minor to others but are monumental for us. At times when we are feeling overwhelmed, DJ will make us smile utilizing his AAC device by requesting to go to Starbucks! He knows when we need a break! As we continue to navigate this path, we do so with the knowledge that each day is precious, and that each obstacle overcome is a testament to the enduring spirit of our brave little boy DJ!”

In this month of “Thanks” we are very thankful for our Convaid friends like Dena who continually let us be apart of their life journey. Dena is one of our adult users who leads an active life while exploring in her EZ Rider 18. Here she is snuggled up while enjoying a ferry ride to Granville Island in Vancouver, where the helpful staff and accessibility ramps were commended by Dena and her family. We are so glad to hear you enjoyed your day out 💜💜💜

💚💚💚Today is World Cerebral Palsy Day💚💚💚

Today, Convaid would like to bring awareness to all of the CP Warriors in the world.

Chuckii is one of our Convaid users and lives with CP. He is 14 years old, loves his family and all of the outings they go on, especially to his sister’s basketball games. Chuckii works hard in therapy to stay strong and it will continually be apart of his life. Although, he is nonverbal, he can communicate and his family has adapted to help Chuckii live an inclusive life.

We have had the pleasure of meeting Chuckii many times and his personality always comes shining through. Thank you for being a part of the Convaid family, Chuckii 💚💚💚

There are more than 17 million people across the world living with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a permanent disability that affects movement. Its impact can range from a weakness in one hand, to almost a complete lack of voluntary movement.

* 1 in 4 children with cerebral palsy cannot talk

* 1 in 4 cannot walk

* 1 in 2 have an intellectual disability

* 1 in 4 have epilepsy.

Cerebral palsy is a lifelong disability and there is no known cure.

Sometimes our Convaid users have to get a little creative…

Kaylee’s mom shares:

“We use a small box to bring her Chromebook higher to her face so she can type because she types with her mouth when she doesn’t use voice to text. Using the Convaid chair is so much more comfortable for Kaylee’s body, especially her bottom since she is always sitting, whereas before she would sit in a regular chair from the dining table and Kaylee would complain it was uncomfortable for her back and bottom.”

With the help of her Rodeo tray, Kaylee is able to do her homework comfortably and drink her smoothie at the same time 📚📝🧋Way to go, Kaylee 🙌🏼

Chuckii goes to school in style with his Convaid EZ Rider. His mom wrote to us: “We get so many compliments on the color and sleek, lightweight look of the stroller.” Thank you for sharing 🩵♿️📚
