A Voice Too Open?
What does it mean when we say a voice is too open? It means that the singer is using 'mouth' vowels instead of an open pharynx. A singer who is singing 'too open' is one who spreads the mouth and closes the pharynx. They usually thrust the jaw too forward as well, which compromises healthy cord closure.
Protected singing is when a singer employs rounded vowels, the larynx is tilting through the release of the sternocleidomastoid muscles, and the acoustical space is open. The jaw can be released due to neck and laryngeal freedom.
A voice that is too open is basically 'classical belting'. Over time, these singers develop many vocal issues such as a wider vibrato, jaw/neck tension, and the use of too much breath pressure to sing.
Have a good day. David
Amazing time yesterday supporting my students; Reese Lynch and Finn McGonigle. I’m so lucky to work with and mentor these amazing young artists!
Congratulations to my student and college audition prep client Reese Lynch, on his amazing portrayal (and JRay nomination!) of “Ram Sweeney” in PVHS’s production of HEATHERS and their “Winner 2024 Musical Drama of the Year”!
Congratulations to my student and college prep client, Bella Sardana, for her JRAY 2024 win as “Lead Actor in a Female Comedic Role” for her outstanding portrayal as Mrs. Lovett in “Sweeney Todd” at RUHS! She’s off to NYU Tisch School of the Arts this fall!
Finn won the BAA Actors Award and Scholarship at the 2024 JRays!
I find this to be accurate.
