Lyon Farm & Vineyards
The Lyon Farm & Vineyards are run by the 4th gen Lyon Family. We grow cherries, grapes, apples +
It’s a Wrap on harvests for both apples and grapes. The rainy, rainy October turned into a sunny and beautiful November. This photo was just taken yesterday.
Now it is pruning season for both cherries and apples. Grape pruning starts in February.
I will post more grape harvest photos soon. It was a fantastic season for both quality and quantity of all our varieties.
It's almost the end of the season, so HONEY CRISP APPLES are now $5 off and reduced to $15 for half a bushel. They are gorgeous and tasty! Stock up for the rest of the fall.
Pickup at Old Mission or Interlochen. Message Gloria at 231-409-4874.
ANOTHER STORY FEATURING MARY LYON THAT WAS PUBLISHED IN 2023.
"There is no traditional roadside stand at Island View Orchards, but visitors are welcome at the 100-acre farm. Island View has been growing cherries since the 1930s. The sixth-generation family farm traces its beginnings to a 40-acre tract secured in 1881. Chances are, if you stop by the orchard to pick up fresh fruit, you’ll be greeted by owner Mary Lyon, who married into the family and has been a fixture on the farm since the 1970s...."

It's Fall and that means Harvest time! We have completed several harvests, and these are from the Pinot Gris harvest. We love that nice weather when the sun is shining. It takes a team of workers, in addition to our harvest pickers. They are called grape pickers, but each bunch of grapes are cut off the vine manually.

The HARVEST continues! This is AUXERROIS from last Friday. These grapes are being made into Left Foot Charley Auxerrois as well as other white blends. Auxerrois is a full sibling to Chardonnay. Yup, they do DNA testing on grapes too. This grape will be a beautifully smooth and delicious wine.
With every harvest, it takes a full team, in addition to all the pickers, as each bunch of grapes are hand picked. Pictured is John Lyon, the grape grower; Philip Lyon, who does many jobs, including picking up the buckets and putting them into the bins; Gary Kahle, who rolled up nets, Danny Lyon, who picked grapes, drove tractor, and washed buckets; and Frank Lyon who drove tractor. Those are just a few of the behind the harvest workers. THANK YOU to everyone who helps out at this busy time.
PS it was a perfect day, 60F with no wind and clear blue skies.
PSS The summer weather was extraordinary, so this is our first time to harvest these grapes in September, rather than October.
It is that time of year, HARVEST! This was on Thursday, and you can see how beautiful the Chardonnay is. This will be Left Foot Charley Gitali, released in 2025. You read that right, it takes 3 years to make amazing sparking wine in the traditional champagne method. Each bunch of grapes is cut by hand from the vine.
This is “Big Red,” our 1971 International Harvester 10 ton truck with 5 speed on the floor. This beauty is over 50 years old! She has no seatbelts, no radio, no power steering and she’s loud!
And today we had a fun group at the Farm picking cherries, eating Mary Lyon's cherry pie, and drinking wine.
Great day on the Farm when 21 kids bring their parents to our place to pick cherries!
