Alzheimer’s Blood Testing BREAKTHROUGH‼️
Blood Test Shows High Diagnostic Accuracy In Identifying Alzheimer’s In Patients With Cognitive Symptoms, Researchers Say
The New York Times (7/28, Belluck) says researchers on Sunday “reported that a blood test was significantly more accurate than doctors’ interpretation of cognitive tests and CT scans in signaling” Alzheimer’s disease.
The study “found that about 90 percent of the time the blood test correctly identified whether patients with memory problems had Alzheimer’s,” while “dementia specialists using standard methods that did not include expensive PET scans or invasive spinal taps were accurate 73 percent of the time” and “primary care doctors using those methods got it right only 61 percent of the time.” The findings were published in JAMA and presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference.
Conclusions and Relevance: The APS2 and percentage of p-tau217 alone had high diagnostic accuracy for identifying AD among individuals with cognitive symptoms in primary and secondary care using predefined cutoff values.
➡️ Future studies should evaluate how the use of blood tests for these biomarkers influences clinical care. 💜
Blood Biomarkers to Detect Alzheimer Disease in Primary and Secondary Care This prospective study evaluates a clinically available Alzheimer disease blood test in primary and secondary care using predefined biomarker cutoff values.

Individuals With Greater Physical Activity Levels Have Lower Risk Of Kidney Stones, Study Suggests…
Renal & Urology News (7/22, Persaud) reports, “Individuals with greater physical activity levels have a lower risk of kidney stones, regardless of genetic susceptibility, new study findings suggest.”
Researchers found “adults in the top vs bottom quartile of total physical activity, as measured by triaxial accelerometers over a 7-day period, had a 50% lower risk of kidney stone disease.” Individuals “with the most moderate-to-vigorous activity (metabolic equivalent of 3 or higher) had a significant 43% decreased risk of kidney stone disease.”
The findings were published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.

Commercial healthcare costs will increase by a projected 8% in 2025, driven by inflationary pressure, prescription drug spending and behavioral health utilization, according to a report from the PwC Health Research Institute.
The report estimates the projected increase in per capita costs of medical services and prescription medications that affect payers' group and individual plans. Health insurers use the projection to calculate health plan premiums for the coming year.
For example, a 5% trend means that a plan that costs $10,000 per member in 2024 would cost $10,500 in 2025. The medical cost trend, or growth rate, is primarily influenced by changes in the price of medical products and services and prescription medications, known as unit cost inflation, and changes in the number or intensity of services used or changes in per capita utilization.
Six things to know:
1. Commercial healthcare spending is estimated to grow to its highest level in 13 years.
2. Hospital performance has improved through the year-to-date relative to the industry’s low margins in 2022, but providers continue to face operational difficulties and rising expenses, according to the report.
3. Half of health plans surveyed said hospital, private equity and other physician consolidation among the top three cost inflators, "reflecting the lasting impact of consolidation on contract negotiation as existing contracts come up for renewal," the report said.
4. The costs of GLP-1 drugs are on a rising trajectory that affects overall medical costs, according to the report.
5. The cost and utilization of behavioral healthcare has grown since the pandemic.
6. Cost deflators, such as the growing adoption of biosimilar medications may provide some relief, but are not enough to offset the cost inflators.

Mediterranean diet beneficial for youths too…
A study published in JAMA Network Open suggested that promoting a Mediterranean diet contributes to improved biomarkers of cardiometabolic health among children and adolescents.
Researchers noted that the diet was associated with improved HDL cholesterol, while no significant effect was observed on DBP, glucose, insulin and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance.

Adults With OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) Have Increased Risk Of Developing Heart-Related Health Conditions, Research Suggests…
Healio (7/11, Swain) says, “Adults with obstructive sleep apnea [OSA] had elevated odds of developing various heart-related health conditions compared with those without it, and the association was strongest in younger individuals, researchers reported.”
The study found that “among those with probable OSA, prevalence ratios for all outcomes were greater in people aged 20 to 40 years than those older than 40 years, including any CVD event,” hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and angina.
The findings were published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

Approximately 40% Of New Cancer Cases Among Adults 30 And Older In US Can Be Attributed To Modifiable Risk Factors, Study Finds…
The Hill (7/11, O'Connell-Domenech) reported, “Four in 10 cancer cases and about half of cancer deaths among U.S. adults 30 years old and older in 2019 were linked to ‘modifiable’ risk factors like smoking, drinking, poor diet and not getting vaccinated, according to a new study.” The findings were published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
CNN (7/11, McPhillips) reported, “There were 10 types of cancer where modifiable risk factors could be attributed to at least 80% of new cases, including more than 90% of melanoma cases linked to ultraviolet radiation and nearly all cases of cervical cancer linked to HPV infection.” Meanwhile, “lung cancer had the largest number of cases attributable to modifiable risk factors...and the vast majority were linked to smoking.”
The researchers found that “excess body weight was the second largest contributor to cancer cases, linked to about 5% of new cases in men and nearly 11% of cases in women,” with the data also indicating that “it was associated with more than a third of deaths from cancer of the endometrium, gallbladder, esophagus, liver and kidney.”
