In Mictlāntēcutli is a god of the dead and the king of Chicunauhmictlan, the lowest and northernmost section of the underworld. His worship sometimes involved ritual cannibalism, with human flesh being consumed in and around the temple.

In the midst of a pandemic, Black Candle Tattoo Co. started the Give-Back program as a small way to show our gratitude to the people on the front lines of society holding things together, not only during crisis, but always. Educators, First Responders, Medical Professionals, and Military service all qualify for the program. Since 2020, we've had over 80 people sign up at blackcandletattoo.com, and have selected 16 people to receive a tattoo credit at the studio.

While tattoo time pales in comparison to the appreciation these individuals truly deserve, we do hope it's something. Sometimes the smallest gestures can make someone's day or week, especially when they need it the most, and more people are getting turned on to the therapeutic benefits of tattooing every day. Yet, I wish it was more.

That is why, to kick off 2024, we have decided to select every person who still remains on the list as January's recipient of the $175 credit, for a total of over $10,000.

We know that not every individual will be able to redeem these credits, as some people may no longer qualify for the program due to career changes or life circumstances, but to those that do, we plan to reach out via email before the end of the month. Once attached to someone's name the credit doesn't have an expiration, so people can wait until they're ready to start talking art.

To anyone reading this who grinds it out on the front lines of society, whether you qualify for this program or not, thank you for all you do. We know it's easy to feel overlooked in a world that holds celebrity and status over the everyday contributions that afford people the ability to chase such things, but we see you. You are deeply appreciated. Thank you
