With a heavy paddle we have to let the community know we are postponing Waterman for 2015. We have been working on an alternative location that potentially would have made this event more sustainable but it is just not working out. We welcome any interest from the SUP and water sports community to get involved and take this great event over as a community led event. We have met with race leaders and tried to pull it together but it just has not worked out. Our goal is to gather with you and anyone interested over the fall to help build a new 2016 plan that will have a strong event and race committee, much needed sponsors and potentially a site that does not have the high cost in labor, fees and permits. Big shout out to Ben Gareiss and others who tried to help us this year. We will post more updates soon and let us know if you want to get involved.

Huge shout out to Ben Gareiss for showing amazing heart and compassion during the 11 mile downwinder by helping out a fellow racer in distress. We strive to embody that spirit for our event, and we salute Ben for being an outstanding competitor and human. Here's the story in his own words:

"I was about an hour into the race in the middle of West Bay trying to fight the huge side swells coming out of the west when I noticed a random board floating. I looked to the west and saw a gentleman in the water with his pfd inflated, so I knew he definitely needed assistance. In my heart it was a no brainer to go help him, but in my mind it was a tough call to make because I had been training for this race for months. After fighting the west wind and waves to reach him we boarded my SUP and went chasing after his board. By the time we reached it, there was a small pack of people that had caught up that was safe for him to paddle back with. This was a good reminder of how powerful our fresh water lakes can be and the safety precautions we need to take when we head out into open water. We make decisions like that without thinking, only with our hearts, to help fellow people in the sport that we all love…"
