Thank you Nel Leland Soper hosting a FANTASTIC National Women’s Day gathering ‘Empowered Women Empower Women!’ at the Clarke Cooke House and her beautiful store Monelle. The energy in the room was spectacular with over 60 dynamic women of all ages sharing the stories and getting to know one another. Wine, food, inspirational words, gifts and shopping. I met new friends and was thrilled to connect with inspiring women I know like Kim Fuller, Katie McDonald, Ann Souder, Heather Ruhsam, Hollie Toppa, and more. This week’s story in Forbes.com is a constructive example of how bridging our sports (and industries) creates increased exposure to a wider audience.

Recently I was invited to give the opening key note at WIMNA’s Women with Drive II conference at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In talking about the emerging path of women in elite sailing I emphasized the synergies between high technology sailing and motorsports. To make the point I shared the story of leading Red Bull F1 drivers Max Verstappen and Checo Perez who jumped on board Team USA at the recent St. Tropez SailGP event. This is a real life example of the benefit of Building Bridges which leads to innovation, growth and more fans , , , ,

Florence Arthaud, Celebrated Solo Sailor, Dies at 57

Sailing and extreme adventurers the world over lost a shining light when Florence Arthaud was killed Monday in a helicopter crash in Argentina.

Florence was a trailblazer and stellar example of ‘adversity creating opportunity’.
After a car crash at 17 which left her paralyzed and a 2 year grueling recovery, Florence Arthaud went on to win the single-hand trans-Atlantic Route de Rhum grueling single-hand race across the Atlantic. She became one of France’s most beloved sports heroes and a role model for women sailors throughout the world.

During her Route du Rhum victory, Florence overcame difficult sea conditions, a faulty radio and a defective automatic pilot to beat a fleet of male sailors. A slipped disc forced her to wear a neck brace. She also set a record for a solo crossing of the Atlantic, with a time of 9 days, 21 hours and 42 minutes.

"I led an adventurer's life and burnt the candle at both ends," Arthaud once said.

Florence, you inspired me and my entire generation of women on the water.
A bright flame has been extinguished this week.
