⚠️Skin cancer can be subtle and is often difficult to detect at an early stage. However, because many skin cancers occur in cosmetically sensitive areas such as the face, early diagnosis is crucial to achieve optimal cosmetic and functional outcomes following treatment. This is why it's so important to schedule regular total body skin exams with a board-certified dermatologist or an advanced practice provider (APP) who is directly supervised by a dermatologist.

This photo shows a subtle basal cell carcinoma on the patient's nasal ala. It was properly identified and biopsied by one of our providers, Kari Nothstine, FNP-C, and the patient is scheduled for Mohs surgery with Dr. Leithauser in the near future. Identifying the lesion while it was relatively small will likely result in a smaller surgical defect than if it had gone unnoticed, and a smaller wound will make it easier for Dr. Leithauser to surgically reconstruct the defect with optimal cosmesis and functionality.

The skin cancer experts: Dr. Leithauser and the other LSI providers are uniquely skilled when it comes to skin cancer diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Laurel Leithauser is the most highly trained skin cancer specialist in Northern Michigan; in addition to being Board-Certified in Dermatology, Dr. Leithauser is a Mohs Surgeon who completed a fellowship in Mohs Surgery and Procedural Dermatology (including cosmetic surgery), and is Board-Certified in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology. At Leithauser Skin Institute, our NPs and PA have each trained one-on-one with Dr. Leithauser for at least a year, with a strong focus on the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.
