We are back at market! We know you might have wondered where we’ve been, and here’s the deal:

It’s been a painful month of production challenges and personal struggles - the kind of time that makes you reevaluate everything, make hard choices, and decide what really matters. What really matters to us is our family, and serving our community with our skills & resources. For the last few years that’s meant trying to stand up a business to support our family.

Unfortunately, with limited time and resources, we’ve been stuck in an extended start-up mode that’s seriously overstretched our emotional & financial capacity. Our dedication to the business has put too much strain on our family, especially this past year as we’ve experienced delays to our facility buildout. We need to adjust our family-business imbalance.

What does that mean for the business? We’re here for the long haul, but the meantime will see changes. We’re down a car (again), so weekday markets like Elk Rapids are not feasible given our family’s needs. We’re going to miss the community of customers & vendors we’ve built there and will return next summer.

We may need to reduce or even pause our production schedule until we have an on-site facility. With a single car and an hour-long commute to Falmouth, we can’t fit 12-14 hour cheesemaking days in during the week, and it’s important for us to try to protect the little time we have together as a family on the weekends.

Please know that we want to keep this business going. We love the work and we love the community connections it’s created. We’re proud of what we’ve built, and see so much potential in where we can go. We just can’t continue operating in a way that puts the well-being of our family at risk. If you’ve read this far, thank you. Thank you for caring enough to hear our story, and for allowing us to share the messy human experience of building a business from scratch. We appreciate you more than you know.

Our apologies for having to leave early yesterday - we had to rush our 2-year-old to the ER for a 107(!!!) degree fever and labored breathing. We’re back home with an RSV diagnosis and doing ok but send us as many “get better” vibes as possible - poor little guy is miserable. ❤️

We’re back and we’ve got a new cheese! Bambino is our “baby parm”, aged young to give you that buttery, nutty flavor you love, but with a sliceable, snackable, semi-firm texture. Basically, the perfect cheese for picnics, cheese boards, and summer snack needs!

Well, folks, this is not the update we were hoping to share. We finally heard from MDARD about our grant application status, and unfortunately we were not chosen. MDARD received 98 eligible applicants and only funded 18, which means there are 79 other local producers across the state feeling just as heartbroken as we are. Amplifying that tough feeling is the concern that we’ve disappointed our amazing community of contributors. You all put your time, energy, and money behind our little creamery, and we feel terrible that our Plan A has fallen through.

That said, we’re not giving up. If starting this business has taught us anything, it’s that tenacity and resilience are often the driving forces that get us through when things get rough. So… we’re going to get back up, dust ourselves off, and move onto Plan B. We always knew the grant funding wasn’t a sure thing, and that we might need to pursue alternative funding elsewhere. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

Now that we know where we stand with the grant, we can start discussing our plans with regional lenders who specialize in supporting small ventures like ours. It won’t be easy - everyone is hurting financially right now, with more businesses seeking support than ever, and at increasing interest rates to boot. But we have each other, and we have you. Our community, who believes in our ability and our potential enough to raise $30,000 in 60 days. We don’t know how long it will take to solidify our business funding, but we will keep you in the loop along the way. Your contributions have made you a part of our creamery’s story, even if that story has one more twist than we’d hoped.

With love,
Joy & Dave
