A piece of history unearthed roughly 6ft in the ground during a storm sewer excavation on Hall Rd. In Clinton Twp. MI.

2 signs were found , along with a variety of old glass bottles , jars , etc. Probably 40-50 of them in total.
Surprisingly, not all was completely destroyed.

One picture details an origional "Mason Jar" , with the origional patent date embossed on the front. Its one of the earliest versions of the common day and well known "Mason jar" . It Was found buried with several others and was one of the few with the zinc lid , and seal that was not deteriorated completely. The origional seal inside the jar.

The "Indian Refining Company" was origionally formed in May of 1906 . Previously known as the "Indian asphalt company", The "Indian refining company" was a predominant player within the oil industry, and a very well known brand throughout the midwest.

Due to the depression ,and along with some other deciding factors, In 1931 ,control over the "Indian Refining Company" was eventually acquired by the well known texas oil Giant "Taxaco".

Throughout the next few years, most of their products , locations, refineries, etc. Were rebranded and eventually on March 15th , 1943 , the companys stockhders sold the remaining shares of "Indian Refining Co." In exchange for stock in "The texas Company" formerly known as "Texaco" and all Gasoline products , names , etc. Were discontinued.

Impressive!

Working a project in Detroit MI today and uncovered the original Sanitary sewer main which was still in excellent shape.We were able to gather a little bit of info on it, for those interested in a little local history.

According to records , this particular system was installed in the mid 1800s which Would make this section of hand layed pipe, around 150 years old.

Made of brick and installed piece by piece , at dangerous depths, there were over 3500 miles of sewer lines installed in the city of Detroit alone, of which 400 miles of brick sewer are still in service today.

The pipe was built in the trench, around a wooden template. The wood template was moved along the line as sections were completed. For those interested, I’ve attached a couple of pictures detailing construction of some of these original Detroit sewer sections under construction along with some other historic items.
