Happy Friday!
Looks like fall temperatures have arrived just in time for our last group run tomorrow and continuing through race weekend!
For tomorrow we will meet as usual behind Retro Fitness at 8am for one last group run, 10 miles for the half's and 8 miles for the full's.
With one week to go we hope you are excited for race weekend (if not a little nervous). We are working on details for the retreat center and so looking forward to seeing you all down in Detroit.
If you are not running this year, please be in prayer for the team as we enter the final week, for staying injury free, for no sickness and for the fundraising.
We will be emailing out an information package early next week with (hopefully) everything you need to know going into the race weekend.
The Sunday retreat center will be open to guests, so if you know someone who is running but not part of the team, they are welcome to join us, but we will ask for a donation towards our cause for the use of the facilities.
Last Week of training schedule (week 20)-
Half Marathon Training -
Tuesday – 3 miles
Thursday - 2 miles
Friday - 2 miles (Suggested additional run)
Sunday - 13.1 miles
Full Marathon Training -
Tuesday - 4 miles

Sunday - 26.2 miles
Happy Friday!
With just 2 weeks to go, it was good to get the longest run out of the way last weekend and now this weekend starts the taper!
The mileage drops and your muscles have a chance to recoup and get ready for race day. Most of the hard work is now done so enjoy this time.
This Saturday we will once again hit the trail starting at 8AM from behind Retro Fitness in Downtown Rochester. Our plan is for 8 miles for the half's and 12 miles for the Full's. We will have our water stations out and some snacks for after the run.
Here is one of the kids we are raising money for. Daniel lives at the Akha House Of Light in Thailand -
I lived with my aunt and grandmother and my sister, Debora, who also came to live together at Akha Light Foundation. I have never seen or known who my parents were. My grandma said that my parents separated and abandoned me and my sister and both started their new families. I hope to see them one day. But living here isn’t bad at all because I’ve always wanted a brother and now I have so many, too many because they annoy me sometimes.

One more week of September and then we are into race month!!
This Saturday is the longest training run at 12 miles for half's and 20 miles for full's. Hope you got plenty of carbs yesterday and for full's have your fueling worked out and ready to go. Remember, never try anything new on race day so make sure you know what you are going to take and try it out before.
This will be our last week meeting at 7am, for the final two group runs on Sep 30th and Oct 7th we will meet at 8am.
Tomorrow we will meet in our normal spot behind Retro Fitness in Downtown Rochester for a 7am (ish) start. Looks like the temps will be great for a long run so I hope as many as possible will make it out and join us, running is so much better in community and especially on these long runs.
Let's remember why we are running! We run for the kids in Thailand and India. We will probably never meet them face to face but we do get to find out a little about their circumstances and just why they need our support.
This is Rungtuwa's story -
I came from Burma, and I don’t have a Thai citizenship. I have one older brother, one older sister and a younger brother. My older sister came here with me. We moved because we needed shelter elsewhere due to the war in Burma. Back in Burma, my family believed in animism, and I don’t know Jesus personally but I’m looking forward to learning more about Him. My mother is still alive and taking care of my 2-year-old baby brother in Burma, but my father died in the war last year. My older brother (14) is fighting against the Burmese government, in the same war my father died fighting. We don’t hear from him so don’t know if he’s dead or alive. My mother sent us here hoping that we would have a better opportunity in life.

We are 1 month out from race day!!
Time is flying by and it is great to have new people joining the team.
Firstly this week, a reminder that the last day for jersey orders is today (Friday 15th). Please get your order in now in order to have it by race weekend -
https://custom2.champ-sys.com/teamstore/?TeamWoodside2023LastOrder
Secondly, we have our race day retreat location! For those that have run with the team in years previous you will recognize this place, we will be meeting up in the old Comerica bank building on Fort St, right beside the start corals! We are excited to once again be in this building in such an awesome location. We will have our own private bathrooms as well as a warm dry location for you and your supporters to hang out. All the details will be sent before race weekend.
The deadline for signing up for one of the international races has now passed, but, you can still sign up for the US only half or the 5k if you have not signed up for anything yet www.freepmarathon.com
With just 4 weeks to go fundraising needs to be a priority now. Running a marathon/half marathon is tough but actually such a small part of this, the training is the hard part. Just think of how many miles and hours and hours of training you have put in, lets make it count as we raise funds for our Kids in Thailand and India
Saturday group training will be starting at 7am meeting behind Retro Fitness in Downtown Rochester.
This week calls for 6miles for the half's and 12miles for the full's.
Week 17's training schedule is -
Half Marathon Training -
Tuesday – 6 miles
Thursday - 5 miles
Saturday – 12 miles
Full Marathon Training -
Tuesday - 10 miles
Thursday - 5 miles
Saturday – 20 miles

Happy Friday!
A couple of important deadlines coming up this week -
Sep 13th - This is the last day you can register for an international race. If you want to run either the international half or the full marathon you have to have your registration at www.freepmarathon.com completed before this date. There are no exceptions, so if you are on the fence about registering now is the time to decide.
Sept 15th - Last day to order your jersey or jacket. Because the orders are taking around 3.5 weeks to arrive, ordering after the 15th there would be no guarantee of arrival before the race weekend. Here is the link to the store -https://custom2.champ-sys.com/teamstore/?TeamWoodside2023LastOrder
Saturday group run will be starting from behind Retro Fitness in Downtown Rochester, our usual location at 7am. We have 11 miles for the half's and 18 for the full's on the schedule and it looks like the weather will be great for a long run!

Happy Friday and Labor Day Weekend
Time to introduce another of the kids in Thailand that we are raising money for.
My name is Sompong and I am a younger brother of Sawitree and Nawan. I was born in an Atheist family and all my family were beggars. Every day after breakfast we would go out and beg people for money until 8:00 P.M. Once we got home, my dad would drink, do drugs, and hurt my mom, my siblings and me. I came to the House of Light to have a better place to live. I have a new family here and I love everybody here.
Saturday morning group run is almost upon us. We will be running the trails starting from behind Retro Fitness in Downtown Rochester at 7am. The half's are set to run 8miles and the full's 14miles.

As we get closer to race day and the long runs get longer, we should talk about fueling!
Pre-Run - Your body needs fuel to power your runs. Thursday's dinner should be your main carb intake prior to the Saturday long run (so Friday will be the carb intake for race day as it is on a Sunday). A good healthy pasta or rice dish works best.
Run-Day - This is really only if running the full. Your body can only store enough fuel (glycogen) to last for about 2 hours, so fueling on the run is a must if you don't want to "hit the wall". There are many different fueling gels and chews on the market, so you need to find one that works for you before race day. Experiment on your longer runs and see how you react to them, you don't want any unknowns on raceday.
This weeks Saturday group run will be in our usual location behind Retro Fitness in downtown Rochester. We will meet at 7 for prayer before heading out on the trails for 10miles for the half's and 17miles for the full's. We will let you know route and water station locations before we head out.
Don't forget to get fundraising!! It is great to have personal goals for your training but we are doing this for more than us, we run for our kids in Thailand and India. So lets get that support and make this about more than us.
If you have not signed up for the fundraising page yet then please do so. You don't have to be running Detroit to raise money, if you are running in any other event around the same time period you can still join us.

Happy Friday!
It is looking like perfect running weather for our group run tomorrow! Much cooler than we have gotten used to.
This is an unusual long run as both half's and full's are scheduled to do 10 miles. We will be meeting in our usual location behind Retro Fitness for a 7am (ish) start. We can't wait to see you!
We are just 8 weeks away from marathon weekend! How is your fundraising going? We run for our kids in Thailand and India, lets show them how much we care by getting as much support as we can over these next few weeks. Race day will be upon us before we know it.
Talking of race weekend, wanted to let you know how the race weekend will look. Some of you have done this before so you know how we do things, for others this is a first time and I sometimes forget that!
Saturday will be the 1mile and 5k. This is held by the river front and starts on Atwater Street. We will meet down by the start lines and pray before we run. There is plenty of parking in the area.
Sunday is the full and half marathons and relay. We will have a retreat center (yet to be determined) where we can meet up and stay warm and dry. We will have food and drink and friends and family are welcome (and encouraged) to join us. We will send out details near to the time of suggested parking and everything else you should need to know.
We will pray and take a group picture before heading out to the corals
If you did not see it, this week they released the courses for all the races
The last order for jerseys will need to be in by Sept 15th in order to have them by race weekend, get your orders in now to make sure you don't forget and leave it too late.

Happy Friday! 9 Weeks til marathon day!!
So good to see so many out at Paint Creek last Saturday as we start our joint training runs. The trails were smooth and shaded, it was wonderful.
This week is 8miles for the half's and 16 for the full's and we will be meeting in the same location behind Retro Fitness in Rochester.
Time to meet another child from Thailand at the House Of Light. This is just one of the 65 kids at this home with similar stories. THIS is why we run, to give these kids a better future, free from the risk of human trafficking.
This is Puttichai -
I was born in Burma and moved to Thailand with my mom after my dad died in Burma. We moved here in Thailand couple years ago, but it has become very hard for our family. We don’t speak Thai and are not citizens here in Thailand, which has made it hard to find work. I want to thank the House of Light that giving me an opportunity to get Thai citizenship, shelter, food and to be able to go to school.

Happy Friday!
What a week! I hope and pray you have all stayed hydrated on your runs. I took to the shelter of Paint Creek Trail for my longest run this week as I had to do it mid-day.
Try to run early or in the shade on these hot days and keep hydrated before and especially after your run.
This week we get to know Ryan a bit better with his Why I Run –
Running used to be the punishment for all my sports growing up, so I naturally grew to not like to run.
My mother was an avid runner and completed numerous marathons and qualified for Boston a number of times, but we were never in a financial position for her to go.
Several years ago, running was taken from my mom when she was diagnosed with MS and Lupis. In 2013, I was able to run her last race with her, a 10k. Losing her ability to run I thought would have crushed her spirit. Instead it awoke the Spirit in her to turn to God and pray for the next chapter in her life.
Neither of us were ever raised in a Christian household, so to see her not let losing her ability to Run and give it all to God truly inspired me. In 2016, I decided to start running more and more and completed my first half marathon on Team Woodside. Prior to this I stuck mostly with cycling.
At first I wanted to run to honor my mother by competing. This changed when I started to learn more about the cause Team Woodside had with raising funds for children at risk. Having 4 daughters and being blessed to raise them in a country where we have the freedom to protect our children from evil, better than other countries, I felt a deep passion for wanting to do more to raise funds to help other children who don’t have anyone to stick up for them.
In 2017, I completed my first full marathon and never looked back. All the steps and training has been to give glory to God by helping to protect children at risk.
In 2021, I completed my first full Ironman. My mom has followed every race. And in 2021 she called me that evening after IMFL to congratulate me. I told her how I knew if she could, she would be in these events as well. I explained that she gave me the inspiration to take that first step in running shoes towards a king road of endurance sports and now I do it for the glory of God. Somehow I think this still honors her the way I intended.
This week is 6miles for the halfs and 10 for the fulls.

We run to take/keep kids from danger on the streets of Thailand and India. Some are orphans, some have family but all are at risk until they get to stay at the Ahka House Of Light or Magimai home.
This week we get to hear about Nawan in Thailand -
My name is Nawan and I am a younger sister of Sawitree. I was born in an Atheist family, and I do not know Jesus yet. Growing up, everyone in my family was a beggar. Every day after breakfast we would go to beg people for money until 8:00 P. Then when we would get home, my dad would drink alcohol and do drugs and would hurt my mom, me and my siblings. I can come here because my older sister Sawitree introduced me and my brother to House of Light and now all 3 of us are living here. For those of you dedicated to your training this morning and meeting up with me at Stoney, I am not putting the tent out. We are meeting in the shelter at the boat launch.
Happy Friday!
Another week down! The weeks seem to be flying past and we are excited to again meet tomorrow to meet and run together.
This week we get to share one of the many kids in Thailand that we are running for. Please pray for these kids, think about them when you feel like the sitting on the sofa rather than getting in that training run. We have a purpose, we run with passion for the kids who need our help and we are so grateful that you are on this journey with us as we ramp up thinking about raising money to make this all worthwhile.
This is Hatairat's story -
My parents divorced when I was six years old. I have three older sisters and one little brother. My mother ran away to work in Bangkok and my father went abroad to work as a laborer with his new wife so my baby brother and I were left to live with my grandmother. We were extremely poor with no food to eat. Since I have arrived at the House of Light, I don’t have to worry about what to eat or who is going to take care of me. Now I am studying hospitality industry management and I am very happy.

The next jersey order goes in at the end of the week! June 30th is the last day. Orders are taking just over 3 weeks so delivery should be around July 23rd
With vacation time upon us we would love to see where you get to run. Send us a picture or post it on the group page. Even if it is a staycation, we still love to see where you run.
Lets talk about running hills! I know many do not like running up hills and avoid it as much as possible but there are many advantages to it. It is not just about being ready to run up the Ambassador Bridge, it can improve your running in all situations.

As an FYI, the jersey orders are taking about 3 weeks to come in. The next order will be submitted July 1st so get your orders in by June 30th.
If you want to run fast, you have to learn to run slow! This does not sound like it makes much sense but this is what it takes. Running all your training at your goal race pace will leave you tired and increase your risk of injury.
Have you heard about 80/20 training? It simply means that 80% of your runs should be done at a slow, easy pace (think- able to carry on an easy conversation whilst running) and 20% should be done at a higher pace (please don’t talk to me).
So to put this into practice if you are following our training plan, pick 1 training run a week, go out slow for the first mile to warm up then turn up the heat and run a little faster than normal. The rest of your runs can now be done at an easy pace.

This week we will get to know our Hines Drive lead –
Hi, for those who don't know me, I am Mike Chekal, the host of the Hines Drive site. My wife Sandy who is into strength training and I have 2 adult daughters, the Farmington Hills campus is home campus.
When I get asked why I run, my response is ”For the Kids”. Every time I can get custom printing of my bib that is what I have them put on it. I endure the pains, trials, and stress of running so that the kids of India and Thailand can be kids without the undue stress that it brings the kids.
My Team Woodside journey began about 10 years ago when I moved from a collection of jobs that had me on my feet a lot, to my current job that has me sitting behind a desk. After a few months I could feel the tug of having to get up and move so I started walking and jogging in the neighborhood. About that time a pair of couples (the Johnson's and Van Rooyen's) came to Farmington Hills recruiting for this thing called Team Woodside. I think it was just changed from Woodside Runners, and I was hooked. As the group runs are so far from me I asked that we try a place closer to a group of Campus and Hines Drive was chosen. The first year was at the Haggerty Road now it is at the Nankin Mill (better Rest Rooms).

In the coming weeks we will be sharing news on our kids in Thailand and India as well as some running advice and some “why I runs” from your group leads.
For this week I thought I had better go first -
For those that don’t know me, I am Richard, your joint team captain together with Ryan. I am married to Heather with 2 grown kids who both run with us. We attend Romeo campus and have been there for 20+ years.
God often has to nudge us to find out what he has planned for us. 11 years ago I found myself overweight and unfit and taking up running was my only option in the circumstances I was in at the time. It was a rough start but I made it to the great distance of a 5k and it only took me 6 months 😊
The following year was the 2nd year of Woodside Runners (our former team name) and I loved the cause but doubted my ability to run a half marathon let alone a full. I signed up anyway. I believe that when God gives us an ability or talent we should use it for good.
This will be my tenth year running with the team, I can't imagine not running to support our kids at risk.
My advice is to be consistent with your training. Make time to get your runs in each week, make a plan and stick to it the best you can.
This weeks schedule is as follows –
Half Marathon Training -
Tuesday – 3 miles
Thursday - 3 miles
Saturday – 5 miles
Full Marathon Training -
Tuesday - 3 miles
Thursday - 3 miles
Saturday – 6 miles
