Thank you to all our supporters who give talents, time and treasures 💗 This is a reminder to ALL: Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts, or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good. What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts--adding, adding to, adding more, continuing.~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes, "Letter to a Young Activist in Troubled Times"
Truckee’s only homeless shelter has closed. Without a safe place to go to receive food, clothing, counseling, and a bed, two volunteers are worried about the dire impacts this could have on Truckee/Tahoe’s unhoused population.

Film Club: ‘Criminalizing Homelessness Won’t Make It Go Away’ There is a public and political push to criminalize homelessness. Is it the wrong approach to deal with the problem?
Dear Supreme Court, please do the right thing and rule in favor of the unsheltered people who brought this case, affirm that everyone in our communities are of value, and acknowledge that the legitimate role of local government is to make room for everyone, in decent conditions, not pick out certain people to lock up or drive out.
The U.S. Supreme Court has decided to take up the case of City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Gloria Johnson to determine whether if, under our Constitution, a local government can make it a crime to involuntarily live outside and unsheltered, when adequate shelter is not available. 😢
Q: How many people are homeless?
A: On a given night in 2023, at least 653,104 people experienced homelessness in the U.S.
Throughout the calendar year 2020, an estimated 1,253,000 people occupied emergency shelters, transitional housing programs, or safe havens. (Note that due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, many shelters closed or reduced bed capacity as a health precaution, and some people may have also avoided congregate shelters for health and safety reasons. This likely results in a lower than usual total).
The Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Veterans Affairs consider a person to be homeless if they are sleeping outside, in a place not meant for human habitation such as a car or abandoned building, or in an emergency shelter or transitional housing program. Other federal agencies have different definitions for homelessness.
