VIENNA
The Austrian capital tops the list for the ninth year running
Vienna has been named the best city in the world for quality of living, according to a new survey. Now in its 20th year, the annual Mercer Quality of Living survey has crowned it the best place in the world for the ninth year in a row.(Independent.co.uk)
The Austrian capital is replete with high culture, from the 19th-century State Opera House, home of the annual Opera Ball, to historic Habsburg-era attractions, such as the Schönbrunn Palace, the ornate Belvedere Palace . Modern Vienna is also flourishing – especially in the outer districts, where hip restaurants, bars and boutiques are leading many to label it as the "new Berlin". Soak up the nightlife of Leopoldstadt by taking the lift to the 18th floor of the Sofitel hotel. At the top you'll reach Das Loft; dasloftwien.at), a sleek, contemporary rooftop bar with views across the city centre to the dramatically illuminated spire of St Stephan's cathedral. I have been and it is fabulous
And there is St Stephan's cathedral at Stephansplatz, a soul-stirring place to begin the day (stephanskirche.at). Part Romanesque, part Gothic, it dates to the 12th century and stands on the ruins of two previous churches. Its rooftop is covered in a mosaic of colored tiles.
As we say “Wien, Wien nur du allein sollst stets die Stadt meiner Träume sein…..

Lucerne Festival
If you want to hear the Vienna Philharmonic outside of Vienna, a great spot would be Lucerne this summer.
Four weeks and more than 100 concerts: experience the international stars of classical music in the heart of Switzerland. Such top orchestras as the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics and conductors like Riccardo Chailly, Andris Nelsons, and Simon Rattle will be among the guests. And with its theme of “Childhood,” Lucerne’s Summer of Music for 2018 will be transformed into a fountain of youth: through programs that awaken memories of our first years of life, as well as numerous concerts specially aimed at young listeners. August 17 – Sept 16
Schani trag den Garten raus!
(Take the garden out Schani!)
Is there anything more pleasant than enjoying Viennese city life in a Schanigarten? One person who clearly knew the answer to tis question was Simon Corra, the man who built Vienna’s first classic Schanigarten in 1825, with its tables, chairs and pot plants at what is now Café Mozart on Albertinaplatz. There are huge numbers of Schanigarten in Vienna city centre today, serving delicious Eiskaffee, sparkling white wine spritzer and wonderful Viennese pastries, but also Sacher Würstel (with mustard and fresh horse radish) and more. With its views of the Burgtheater and Rathauspark, the large historic Ringstrasse Terrace at Café Landtmann is very popular with Viennese and tourists alike, as is the open-air at Café Hofburg, the Schanigarten at Café Museum on Karlsplatz, right next to the Naschmarkt and with views of the Karlskirche and the golden cupola od the Secession is a perfect spot for what Viennese do when in doubt – they stop and have a Kaffee(Viennese coffee that is such as a Melange or a Grosser Brauner) But there are Schanigartens all over Vienna, in every district, even a small pub will do just that as the wheather gets better “Schani trag den Garten raus?!
The Servin clan did that a few weeks in Vienna. We stopped in many Schanigartens for coffee, for lunch and my Texans had beers and beers………, but also tried Viennese Eiskaffee.
So as the article of Austrian Airlines mag said ”what are you waiting for? Come to Vienna and enjoy the open air in a Schanigarten.”
