Depending on where you live, different plants might be the primary culprits.
● Spring - Trees such as oak, maple, and pine
● Summer - Grasses like ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, and Bermuda
● Fall - Weeds such as ragweed, sagebrush, and lamb quarters

What is RSV, and why is it a concern?

RSV, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus, is a common virus that can cause mild cold-like symptoms in older children and adults. However, it can be much more severe in infants and young children, particularly those under the age of 2. RSV can lead to bronchiolitis and pneumonia, which can be life-threatening for infants.

Children attending day care and pre-K through 12thgrade in New York State must receive all required doses of vaccines on the recommended schedule in order to attend or remain in school. This is true unless they have a valid medical exemption to immunization. This includes all public, private, and religious schools. A medical exemption is allowed when a child has a medical condition that prevents them from receiving a vaccine. There are no nonmedical exemptions to school vaccine requirements in NYS.

Within 14 days of the first day of school or day care, parents must:

Show proof of their child's up-to-date vaccinations,
OR
Provide a valid medical exemption from vaccination.
In order to attend or remain in school or day care, children who are unvaccinated or overdue must receive at least the first dose of all required vaccines within the first 14 days. They also must receive subsequent vaccines in the series within a 14-day period of when they are due to complete the immunization series.

We look forward to getting your child ready for back to school for another year of learning and growth. Wishing you a wonderful remainder of the summer, and we'll see you soon!

Did you know? Sleep:
Plays a critical role in supporting a child's immune system. During sleep, the body produces immune cells that help fight off infections and illnesses. Children who consistently get enough sleep are better equipped to ward off common illnesses and recover more quickly when they do get sick.

Behavioral and Social Development: Sleep impacts behavior and social interactions in children. Sleep-deprived children are more likely to exhibit impulsive behavior, have difficulty controlling their emotions, and struggle with focusing on tasks. Additionally, well-rested children are more socially engaged and better able to navigate social situations.

It also impacts overall health and longevity: The habits children develop around sleep can have long-term effects on their health. Research suggests that poor sleep in childhood may increase the risk of chronic health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems later in life. Establishing healthy sleep patterns early on can contribute to a healthier adulthood.

Even though its still summer, Make sure your kids are getting enough rest and play!

If your little one is not feeling so great, maybe its time for a check up?

We often hear the phrase "sleep like a baby," but have you ever stopped to consider just how essential sleep is for a child's health and well-being? As parents, caregivers, and educators, it's crucial to recognize the profound impact that sleep has on the physical, mental, and emotional development of children.
1. Growth and Physical Development: Sleep is an integral part of the growth process in children. During deep sleep, the body releases growth hormone, which helps in tissue repair, muscle growth, and bone development. This hormone plays a crucial role in ensuring that children reach their full height potential and develop strong bodies.
2. Cognitive Development: Sleep is closely linked to cognitive development, as it directly affects memory consolidation and learning. Research shows that during sleep, the brain organizes and stores information gathered during the day, helping children retain what they've learned and perform better academically. A well-rested child is more alert, focused, and better equipped to absorb new knowledge.
3. Emotional Well-being: Adequate sleep is vital for emotional regulation in children. Sleep deprivation can lead to mood swings, irritability, and even an increased risk of developing mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. Quality sleep helps children manage their emotions, handle stress, and interact positively with peers and adults.

6 More days until! the summer is here!

As the warm sunshine and laughter-filled days of summer approach, it's time to prepare your little superheroes for an unforgettable season of fun and adventure! At Village Pediatric Group, we're here to guide you on how to ensure your children have a safe and enjoyable summer. 🌈🏖️

🍉 Here are some essential tips to help you get your kids ready for a fantastic summer experience:

1 Stay Hydrated: Hydration is key during the hot summer months! Encourage your children to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Create a fun challenge by using colorful water bottles or adding natural flavors like fresh fruit to make staying hydrated exciting!

2 Sun Protection: Protecting your child's delicate skin from harmful UV rays is crucial. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF before outdoor activities and reapply every few hours. Don't forget to provide them with wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and lightweight, breathable clothing for extra protection.

3 Stay Active: Summertime is perfect for outdoor play! Encourage your children to engage in physical activities that promote healthy growth and development. Organize family outings to the park, go for bike rides, or play games that involve running, jumping, and exploring nature.

4 Healthy Eating Habits: Fresh fruits, veggies, and nutritious snacks are essential for your child's well-being. Encourage them to enjoy seasonal produce like juicy watermelons, berries, and colorful salads. Make healthy eating fun by involving your children in meal planning and preparation.

The current illness season has been brutal for parents and kids alike. Visits to the doctor and school and parental absenteeism from work have been at record levels. And when illnesses seem back-to-back, it’s tricky to determine when it’s safe and appropriate to send them back to the classroom or daycare.

Keeping kids home when they’re contagious with illness is a critical way to reduce the spread of sickness to others. In addition, many viral illnesses suppress the immune system, making recovering kids more susceptible to new illnesses if they return to the classroom too quickly.

Sick kids are not good learners. Not only are sick kids potentially spreading illness to others, their day is not effective or productive. Humans are meant to rest and recover as the body fights disease. A busy classroom setting is not conducive to this important work.

Between the ages of 11 and 18, an adolescent experiences many physical and emotional changes that
can pose complex physical and mental health concerns requiring age-focused patient care that
addresses:
 Healthy lifestyle habits
 Sexual health
 Hormone issues
 Menstrual issues
 Nutrition and weight management
 Skin care
 Substance abuse
 Stress management
 Gynecology
 School, family, and home concerns
 Social pressures
 Sexuality- and gender-related topics
 Relationships
 Eating disorders
 Depression or anxiety
A particular area of concern among adolescents is mental health. Many children and young people
experience psychological and emotional disorders. In fact, some conditions, such as eating disorders, are
more prevalent in children and adolescents than in adults. Often, mental health problems and
behavioral disorders are challenging to identify, because it is difficult for a young person to discuss these
subjects and explain how they feel.

Sun damage to the body is caused by invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Sunburn is a type of skin damage caused by the sun. Tanning is also a sign of the skin reacting to potentially damaging UV radiation by producing additional pigmentation that provides it with some, but often not enough, protection against sunburn.

Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. People of all skin colors are at risk for this damage. You can reduce your risk by:

Limiting your time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the sun’s rays are most intense.
Wearing clothing to cover skin exposed to the sun, such as long-sleeve shirts, pants, sunglasses, and broad-brim hats. Sun-protective clothing is now available. (The FDA regulates these products only if they are intended to be used for medical purposes.)
Using broad spectrum sunscreens with a SPF value of 15 or higher regularly and as directed. (Broad spectrum sunscreens offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays, two types of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.)
Reading the label to ensure you use your sunscreen correctly.
Consulting a health care professional before applying sunscreen to infants younger than 6 months.

If you have further questions or unique challenges in keeping your family safe in the sun, book an appointment at
www.VillagePediatricGroup.com to address your concerns.
